TTUHSC Greylisting Pilot Project » Opt-In Stage
The IT Division is instituting a new enhanced service for e-mail users in an effort to reduce the amount of unsolicited e-mail, viruses, and spyware. This new service is referred to as greylisting. We have been testing the service for more than six months and have seen, on average, a 75 percent reduction in unsolicited e-mail for the participants.
Greylisting reduces the amount of unsolicited e-mail (SPAM) delivered to TTUHSC e-mail addresses by capitalizing on Spammers' reluctance to configure their mail servers according to Internet standards. Greylisting identifies correctly configured e-mail servers by requiring an e-mail server to resend a message. This only occurs the first time a message is received from an unknown sender. Depending on the mail server, this resend could take anywhere between 5 minutes to an hour.
Concerns do exist about delays in receiving important emails. To address these concerns, there is a process called whitelisting in which valid email sources can be defined and bypass the Greylisting process. If you have concerns about a delay in e-mail coming from a specific e-mail address please contact the IT Help Desk at (806) 743-2875 or by e-mail, ithelpdesk@ttuhsc.edu.
To join the Greylisting Pilot Project, please send a blank e-mail message from your TTUHSC e-mail address to greylist-opt-in@ttuhsc.edu with the subject "Greylist Opt-In Request". Please send an opt-in request for yourself only. We cannot accept third-person requests.
