- Medical Education at
USC
At USC Medical Education, we are dedicated to the mission of
transforming the education of health professionals through innovation
and building new approaches to teach heath professionals. This website
is about community of learners, colleagues and alumni who are dedicated
to the same mission. We offer a comprehensive program in faculty
development, designed especially for busy healthcare professionals
interested in improving their expertise in teaching/learning,
educational leadership and implementing educational innovations. We
offer an advanced degree (M.S.Ed.) in medical education and fellowships.
This program combines the desirability of face-to-face learning with the
flexibility and freedom of our distance education components (Video
Clips, Audio, Electronic Submission, Discussion Boards, Chat rooms
etc.). The other programs and services that we provide include
Standardized Patient, Evaluation and Testing. Some of the excellent
examples of our innovative teaching methods are: Teaching Leadership

- The Theory Underlying
Concept Maps and How To Construct Them - Joseph D. Novak,
Cornell University
Concept maps follow the idea of assimilation theory. Assimilation theory
suggests a distinction between meaningful learning and rote learning.
Rote learning is often emphasized in educational settings, and consists
of simple memorization of information, without concern for relationships
among concepts. In contrast, meaningful learning results from linking
new information to relevant, preexisting concepts or propositions in the
cognitive structure of an individual. Ausubel believes that the most
important factor for learning is what the learners already know. Concept
maps are designed to tap into a person’s cognitive structure, and to
externalize concepts and propositions.
