This laboratory studies sleep, and, in particular, the physiology and neurophysiology of breathing in sleep. The goal of this research is to understand why breathing fails in sleep in adults and children with sleep apnea and in infants in the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Recordings of the activity of a single brainstem respiratory neurons are taken from intact unanesthetized animals during natural sleep and wakefulness. These recordings are analyzed to determine the effect of states of consciousness on central respiratory drive.
