Lutherer Helps Procure Funding

Physiology Professor Lorenz Lutherer was instrumental in preparing the Red Book submission for a Center for Education, Research and Clinical Service in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke at TTUHSC. The proposal requested $5,000,000 over a three-year period. Congress appropriated approximately $375,000 for the first year as part of the Omnibus Appropriations Bill. The first year of such proposals is rarely fully funded, but funding in the first year increases the likelihood of funding for subsequent years. An application for 2.65 million for year two and 2 million for year three has been submitted for inclusion in the next budget bill. The Center should fund internal seed grants for TTUHSC faculty that can be leveraged into extramural sources, provide training for students, residents and health care providers within the regions served by TTUHSC and begin to address health disparities in public education and health care delivery within the region.
A detailed list of Federal appropriations is available in the Avalanche-Journal article.

Congratulations to HESHAM ATTAYA, a new Barry M. Goldwater Scholar!

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarshipand Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

According to Julie Isom of the TTU/HHMI Program, this prestigious scholarship is awarded to no more than four students at any individual U.S. university. There were about 300 given nationally in 2000. The Texas Tech record is unparalleled in the state of Texas for the last 6 years. HHMI Fellows continue to dominate the award list from Texas Tech. This scholarship awards the students with up to $7,500.00 for tuition, room and board.
Hesham's name is listed under "Texas" 2002 Scholars.

Department of Physiology Center of Excellence

Dr. David Smith, President of Texas Tech University Medical Center, has announced that a group within the Department of Physiology has beenawarded an institutional Center of Excellence Grant. This grant totals$125,000 to be awarded over the next two years. The grant will enable thegroup to expand their imaging capabilities. The goal of the center is toprovide innovative in vivo visualization techniques to elucidatethe mechanisms underlying specific physiological and pathological statesat the subcellular, cellular, and tissue/organ level. The directors ofthe Center are Dr. John Orem, administrator, and Dr. Raul Martnez-Zaguiln,scientific director.

The Center will foster interactions among interested faculty in thebroad field of imaging cellular events (ion movements, membrane potential, free radicals) in subcellular compartments, single cells, and multicellular(e.g. tissue and organs) complexes in living entities. Towards this goal, five group leaders and their laboratories have joint efforts in the Center:Drs. Escobar, Gyrke, Martnez-Zaguiln, Nathan andSarvazyan. These laboratories employ fluorescence-based techniques in mostof their studies. The cohesiveness of this group is further enhanced bythe selection of experimental models that deal with the general area ofcardiovascular systems. Although the common area is cardiovascular, eachone of them has created his/her own niche that covers cell imaging studiesfrom subcellular compartments (Martnez-Zaguiln, Gyrke),single cells (Nathan, Gyrke, Sarvazyan, Martnez-Zaguiln,Escobar), cell populations (Martnez-Zaguiln, Sarvazyan),tissues (Gyrke), and organs (Escobar).

Current ongoing projects are involved in the study of smooth muscleand endothelial cells (lining blood vessels), cardiac myocytes and veryspecialized cells in the heart (pacemakers). The Center will involve graduatestudents from our department, as well as from the Department of ChemicalEngineering at TTU. Undergraduate students from TTU will also be involvedin several research projects. The Center will support a seminar seriesin which speakers from other institutions present their work in severalaspects of imaging. The training environment of undergraduate, graduate, postdoctorates and technicians will allow them to use state-of-the-artcell visualization techniques.
