Serious Intestinal Injury Prompts Kipp Brothers Recall of Mag Stix Magnetic Building Sets
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Mag Stix Magnetic Building Sets
Units: About 800
Distributor: Kipp Brothers, of Carmel, Ind.
Hazard: Small magnets inside the plastic sticks can fall out. Magnets found by young children can be swallowed or aspirated. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received one report of an eight-year-old girl who was hospitalized after swallowing loose magnets. Extensive surgery was required to remove the magnets and repair intestinal perforations.
Description: The recalled Mag Stix sets contain 24 pieces including twelve 1-inch sticks, four 2.25-inch sticks, and eight metal balls. The sticks are yellow, green, blue and rust-colored. "Item No. 40330 Made in China" and UPC number 7 7704 40330 1 are printed on the packaging.
Sold at: Kipp Brothers' showroom, Fall 2005 catalog and Web site (order # NB8141) from September 2005 through March 2006 for about $3.

Children's Metal Jewelry Recalled by Future Industries Due to Lead Poisoning Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Essentials for Kids Jewelry Sets
Units: About 20,000
Importer: Future Industries, of Cliffwood Beach, N.J.
Hazard: The recalled metal jewelry sets contain high levels of lead.
Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: The recalled jewelry sets include a necklace, bracelet and pair of earrings made of green, blue or pink plastic beads. The necklaces have painted metallic pendants in the shape of shoes, girls, blackboards with "ABCD," or school buses. The other recalled jewelry sets include a necklace and seven pendants, one for each day of the week. The pendants are shaped as sandals, purses or butterflies.
"Essentials for kids" is printed on the packaging.
Sold at: Gift stores, dollar stores, and small discount stores nationwide from August 2005 through April 2007 for about $1.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled jewelry away from children. Return it to the store where purchased for a full refund, or contact Future Industries for information on receiving a full refund.

Hammock Stands Recalled by The Algoma Net Co. Due to Fall Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Hammock Stands
Units: About 3,000
Importer: The Algoma Net Co., of Algoma, Wis.
Manufacturer: Danlong Industries Ltd., of China
Hazard: The foot brackets on the hammock frame can crack or tear, causing a consumer to fall to the ground.
Incidents/Injuries: Algoma has received 28 reports of foot brackets cracking or tearing, including eight reports of users falling to the ground. One consumer reported lower back pain and nerve damage, and one consumer reported cutting her lip.
Description: The recall includes Algoma hammock stands model numbers 6250, 6250BH, and 6290W88B. They were sold with a cotton rope hammock with wood spreader bars and attached chains. The frame is made of steel and has five separate tubular pieces, including two foot brackets. The model number is located at the top of the instruction sheet that was provided with the hammock stand.
Sold at: Kohl's, D.S.I./Supervalu, Fingerhut, Mills Fleet Farm, Shopko Stores, Inc. and Target.com from December 2006 through May 2007 for between $100 and $150.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the hammock stands and contact Algoma for instructions on returning the foot brackets for a free replacement. The recalled units should not be returned to the retailer.

Infantino Recalls Children's Toy Castles Due to Choking Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Shape Sorting Toy Castles
Units: About 68,000
Manufacturer: Infantino LLC, of San Diego, Calif.
Hazard: The plastic rod can come loose allowing the colored counting beads to slide off of the toy, posing a choking hazard to young children.
Incidents/Injuries: Infantino has received four reports of children nearly choking on the colored beads after putting them in their mouths.
Description: The recalled toy castles have counting beads, four play figures and several different shapes and letters that fit into holes in the castle. "infantino(r)" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the side with the letters. The recall only includes castles with the following date codes: 5349, 6087, 6132 and 0906. Castles with other date codes, no date code or with a plastic rod attached with a metal screw are not included in this recall. The date code is stamped on the underside of the blue top and can be viewed through the top square shape or top "A" letter openings.
Sold at: Wal-Mart, Target, Marshalls, Meijers and other specialty toy retailers nationwide from January 2006 through May 2007 for about $12.

Fire Hazard with Thermador(r) Built-In Ovens Leads to Recall by BSH Home Appliances Corp.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Thermador(r) Brand Built-In Ovens
Units: About 42,000
Manufacturer: BSH Home Appliances Corp., of Huntington Beach, Calif.
Hazard: The oven can have gaps in the insulation where overheating can occur and when used in the self-cleaning mode it can cause nearby cabinets to overheat. This can pose a fire hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: BSH Home Appliances has received ten reports of incidents including one which resulted in a fire that caused extensive property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Description: This recall involves Thermador(r) Brand built-in single ovens and combination models which have a conventional oven and a microwave. The model numbers of the single ovens are C271B, C301B, SEC271B and SEC301B. The model numbers of the combination models are SEM272B, SEM302B, SEMW272B and SEMW302B. The ovens have date codes between FD8403 and FD8701. The model number and date code can be found on the underside of the control panel.
Sold at: Appliance and specialty stores nationwide from November 2004 through May 2007 for between $2,400 and $3,900.

Hazard: The circular ash tray attached to the stainless steel legs of the grill could contain sharp edges, posing a laceration hazard.

Description: This recall involves the Play Wonder Barbeque Grill. The grill is metal and has an orange metal base and top, along with stainless steel legs and a removable circular ash tray. The grill set also includes tongs and a spatula. The "Play Wonder" logo is located on the lower right corner of the packaging.

Hazard: The heater's cord can overheat where it enters the base of the unit, which could pose a fire hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: Lasko has received 28 reports of failed power cords, including six reports of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Description: This recall involves Lasko ceramic heaters manufactured in 2005. Model numbers included in the recall are: 5132, 5345, 5362, 5364, 5420, 5532, 5534 and 5566. Model numbers are located on the bottom of the unit or at the rear of the base of the heaters.
Sold at: Major retailers, home centers and discount department stores nationwide from September 2005 through April 2006 for between $20 and $50.

Bond Manufacturing Co. Issues Recall for Folding Recliner Chairs That Can Collapse and Injure Users
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Rockingham Deluxe Lounge Chairs (also sold as Vanderwall Folding Recliner Chairs)
Units: About 68,000
Importer: Bond Manufacturing Co., of Baypoint, Calif.
Hazard: The chairs can collapse or fall backward due to faulty support brackets or weak frames, posing fall and severe laceration hazards to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: Bond is aware of 13 incidents in which the recalled chairs fell backwards or collapsed. There have been eight reports of injuries. Four consumers reported injuries to their shoulder, back or neck, one consumer reported an injury to her head, two consumers reported hand injuries, and one consumer suffered a severe laceration to the tip of her finger when the chair collapsed.
Description: The recalled recliner chairs have a mesh covering attached to the steel frame by a woven cord. The chairs were sold in the following colors: bronze, navy blue, spa blue, spa green, spa linen, orange, lime, teal and taupe. The recliners are about 40 inches long, 28 inches wide and 46 inches high.
Sold at: Hardware, variety and discount department stores nationwide from December 2006 through April 2007 for between $35 and $100.

Name of Product: Blue/Green Dual Glassware Pieces
Units: About 219,000 (about 180,000 orange and red glassware pieces were recalled on May 8, 2007)
Importer/Distributor: Pier 1 Imports, Fort Worth, Texas
Hazard: The glassware can crack or break unexpectedly, posing a laceration hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: Pier 1 Imports has received 21 reports in total of glassware that cracked or broke, including one injury involving a minor cut from broken glass associated with a previous recall.
Description: The recalled glassware pieces involve large and small tumblers, goblets and margaritas. The bottom half of the tumblers is aquamarine and the top half is yellow. The bottom of the margaritas and the goblets is clear and the top is aquamarine and yellow.

Gateway Inc. Recalls Notebook Computer Batteries Due to Fire Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Gateway Lithium Ion Battery Packs
Units: About 14,000
Battery Distributor: Gateway Inc., of Irvine, Calif.
Hazard: These lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, which could pose a fire hazard to consumers. This is not an internal battery cell defect.
Incidents/Injuries: Gateway has received four reports of battery packs overheating, including minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The recalled battery packs were shipped as the primary or spare battery pack for some Gateway 400VTX and 450ROG series notebooks, and are identified by part numbers: 6500760 or 6500761. The part number and "made by SMP" are printed on a label on the underside of the battery pack.
Sold through: Gateway's professional and direct distributors and Gateway Country stores nationwide from May 2003 through August 2003. The computers with these batteries sold for between $1,200 and $2,400 and individual batteries sold for between $60 and $90.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should stop using these recalled batteries immediately and contact Gateway to receive a replacement battery. Consumers can continue to use the notebook computers safely by turning the system off, removing the battery pack, and using the AC adapter and power cord to power the system until the replacement battery is received.

Asko Cylinda Recalls DW95 Series Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

Name of Products: Asko DW95 Model Series Dishwashers
Units: About 130,000
Manufacturer: Asko Cylinda AB, of Vara, Sweden
Importer/Distributor: AM Appliance Group Inc., of Richardson, Texas
Hazard: An electrical component in the dishwasher can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 21 reports of dishwasher fires. Product and property damage has been reported. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The recalled dishwashers include the ASKO model series DW95 with model numbers 1355, 1375, 1385, 1475, 1485, 1555, 1585, 1595, 1655, 1805, 1885, and 1895 manufactured from January 1995 through April 2000.
The model number, serial numbers and manufacture date are printed on the name plate on the right interior side of the dishwasher door. Asko dishwashers manufactured after April 2000 are not included in the recall.
Sold by: Major kitchen appliance distributors/dealers nationwide from January 1995 through April 2000 for between $750 and $1,300.
Manufactured in: Sweden

Hazard: The zipper pull can detach from the jacket's zipper, posing a choking hazard to young children.
Incidents/Injuries: Nordstrom has received one report of the zipper pull detaching. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The recalled jackets were sold in infant, toddler and youth sizes. They are navy-colored and long-sleeved. They have a zipper-front with the flag of England embroidered on the left shoulder and an "England" patch on the left chest. There are two zipper front pockets in addition to the zipper front. "Pine Peak Blues" is printed on a label inside the jacket.

Hazard: The forks can break during use causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall and suffer serious injuries.

Globe Fire Sprinkler Corp. Recalls Dry Fire Sprinklers Model J Heads Can Fail to Operate During a Fire

Name of Product: Globe Model J Series Dry Fire Sprinklers
Units: About 300,000
Manufacturer: Globe Fire Sprinkler Corp., of Standish, Mich.
Hazard: The sprinkler heads can deteriorate over time and fail to operate in a fire.
Incidents/Injuries: Globe has received five reports of sprinklers that failed to operate as intended during a fire. Globe has received no reports of injuries caused by sprinklers failing to operate.
Description: Model J Series dry fire sprinklers come in pendent, upright, and sidewall configurations. The name "Globe," the letter "J"
and the year of manufacture (1990 though 1999) are embossed on the frame of each sprinkler. These dry sprinklers were designed to be installed in areas of buildings where the sprinklers or water supply pipes may be subject to freezing, such as unheated attics, freezers and coolers, parking garages, porches and warehouses.
Sold by: Fire protection contractors nationwide from January 1990 through December 1999 for between $27 and $36 per sprinkler head.

Simplicity Recalls Cribs Due to Fall, Entrapment and Choking Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Nursery-in-a-Box Cribs
Units: About 40,000
Manufacturer: Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa.
Hazard: The assembly instructions provided with the cribs incorrectly instruct consumers how to attach the crib's drop side. If improperly installed, the drop side can disengage from the crib, posing fall and entrapment hazards for the child. Additionally, the metal locking pins on the drop side can pop off, presenting a choking hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of an incident in which the crib's drop side, which was installed upside down, fell from its upright position and the metal locking pins became dislodged. Simplicity received a report of wrong instructions being packaged with the crib.
Description: The recalled cribs are part of the Nursery-in-a-Box furniture set which also includes a changing table and clothing organizer. The cribs are cherry, white or natural in color. Only model numbers 8910 and 8050 with serial numbers 3005 HY through 0806 HY are included in this recall. The model and serial numbers are printed on an envelope permanently attached to the mattress support. "Simplicity,"
model and serial numbers are also printed on a label on the bottom rail of the headboard.
Sold at: Department stores and children's product stores from August
2005 through May 2007 for about $200.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately check the crib to make sure the drop side is securely fastened and correctly installed. Contact Simplicity to receive correct assembly instructions, or consumers can download the assembly instructions at the firm's Web site, www.simplicityforchildren.com. If the drop side is not properly installed, consumers should stop using the crib until it is assembled correctly.
