Patient Care:

For patients requiring interventional procedures, residents will learn how to acquire informed consent for complex interventional procedures, how to maintain conscious sedation, and the radiological techniques for many of the percutaneous procedures.

Medical Knowledge:

Residents will learn a systematic approach to reading radiographs, and learn to recognize common radiological findings in hospitalized patients. These will include chest, abdominal, bone and joint radiographs, CNS, CT, MRI, and nuclear scans, mammography and common contrast procedures.

Interpersonal/Communication Skills:

Residents will learn communication skills with other physicians/care givers that have ordered radiological procedures.

Professionalism:

Residents will learn how to treat all radiological team members with respect. They will also learn what information is critical to the radiologist for the most accurate interpretation of the procedure.

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement:

Residents will learn to develop consistent habits for radiographic film reading that will help them reduce errors in the future when interpreting their own films.

System-Based Practice:

Residents will be exposed to the network of systems which allow the radiographic interpretations to be conveyed to the care giver in a timely fashion. This practice promotes optimum outcomes in patients.

Methods of Evaluation:

The radiologist evaluation of the residents elective will be based on:

  1. Showing up in a timely fashion on scheduled days
  2. The quality of discussion during the Socratic method of teaching
  3. Evidence that the resident has done some reading on His/her own in regards to a particular problem
