NEW eMail Security Feature- TTUHSC Email Quarantine

The TTUHSC Email Quarantine is a new security initiative that scans all incoming and outgoing TTUHSC email for phishing attempts, viruses and other potentially dangerous content.

When a security threat is identified in the body of an email or in an attachment, the Email Quarantine will attempt to “clean” the message to remove any dangerous content. If the dangerous content is successfully removed the remainder of the message will be delivered. In the event the dangerous content is NOT able to be removed, the message will be “quarantined” and will NOT be delivered to the intended recipient.

The Quarantine and .Zip Files

In addition to cleaning viruses and other malicious content, the Email Quarantine also blocks the sending or receiving of “.zip” files. This type of file is often used in email because in combines multiple documents into a single compressed folder. Compressing the file size allows email users to send documents while saving storage space. Unfortunately, these types of files are also common vehicles used to deliver harmful computer viruses and other types of dangerous programs.

The Email Quarantine will remove all .zip files sent to, or from, a TTUHSC email address. These .zip files will be replaced with a blocked file alert attachment which indicates a file was blocked. If you are the recipient of a blocked .zip file, please contact the sender to inform them that this file format is not permitted on the TTUHSC email service and ask them to send an acceptable file type. If you have any questions or concerns about an email that contains any attachments, please contact the IT Solution Center or your local help desk. (see below)

Alternatives to .Zip Files

Acceptable file types include documents such as Word, Excel, and PDF, and image files such as Jpeg. Files may need to be sent via several emails with attachments in order to accommodate the email size limits in Exchange.
