Clean Water for Solong

  • Speaker: Engineers Without Borders Texas Tech University Chapter
  • Date: Wednesday, November 20, 2013
  • Time: 12:00 noon CT
  • Location: ACB 120

Engineers without Borders (EWB) began after a single project in San Pablo, Belize. The project was completed in May 2001, and the civil engineering professor who was involved began to form EWB shortly thereafter. There are now 25 established professional chapters, 26 developing professional chapters, and 104 established student chapters, with another 43 in development.

The Engineers Without Borders chapter at Texas Tech University (EWB-TTU) was established in February 2006. EWB-TTU is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to create sustainable infrastructure to improve quality of life.

During this presentation, EWB-TTU will discuss their current international project: a water filtration system for the Naso tribe in Solong, located in northwestern Panama. Solong is home to approximately 300 people, most of who are direct descendants of the Naso tribe. The goals of the project include addressing health problems that Solong currently faces; countering diseases that are rampant throughout the area, including blue baby syndrome, meningitis, and hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS); and preventing pollution and cross contamination.

Free lunch will be provided to the first 40 attendees!

This presentation will not be linked to the additional TTUHSC campuses; however, it will be recorded for future viewing on the OGH website.
