In March 2012, 26 medical students from Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM), along with 2 DrPH students from University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH), 4 PLFSOM faculty, and 5 volunteers, traveled to Choluteca, Honduras for a medical mission. The group learned a lot about the Honduran health care system and the types of medical problems typical to the outlying impoverished communities. While all were able to practice their medical and public health skills, they were left pondering better ways to make a lasting impact on rural, impoverished communities and innovative approaches to meet the challenges presented by "parachute medicine" so that future missions are more effective. |
