GENERAL INFORMATION
The purpose of the ACLS provider course is to advance the education and training of all healthcare professionals who respond to patients who experience a cardiopulmonary arrest or a life-threatening cardiopulmonary emergency. The provider course is in essence an adult-focused learning and evaluation tool for healthcare providers who, as part of their professional responsibility, respond to resuscitation attempts.
The ACLS provider course is designed to review, organize, and prioritize the skill and didactic information needed to handle a cardiac arrest, events that may lead to a cardiac arrest, and events that follow a cardiac arrest. It is NOT designed as a complete course in arrhythmia recognition or pharmacology. It is designed to review those subjects.
At the end of the ACLS provider course, the successful ACLS provider will be able to manage the first 10 minutes of the resuscitation of a person who initially arrests from Ventricular Fibrillation using what the ACLS Provider Manual refers to as "the basic and advanced" skills of ACLS.
The foundation of ACLS is Basic Life Support. ACLS Guidelines have incorporated skill evaluation of Adult 1 & 2 person CPR in conjunction with an AED. Documentation of successful ACLS Provider Course completion includes a requirement that learners demonstrate satisfactory hands-on skills in adult 1 and 2 person CPR, using basic airway adjuncts and satisfactory application and operation of an AED.
The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency of BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association, and any fees charged for such a course do not represent income to the Association.
