Emergency Medicine
Research
The Emergency Medicine Department's objective for Research is to prepare the resident to formulate a clinical question, search the literature effectively, read the literature critically, apply EBM measures and evaluate other sources of biomedical information.
A theme of EBM Biostatistics and research has been developed for the 3 year term of residency, beginning in year 1 with 2 dedicated weeks in Research covering assigned reading, exercises in literature search, Critically Appraised Topics (CATs) and data analysis.
Research will be an on-going project throughout residency, consisting of:
- An online course for EBM.
- CITI Human Subjects Protection Course
- Assigned readings from Biostatistics text and data analysis assignments.
- Assigned readings from Hully's "Designing Clinical Research".
- Complete tests and exercises on the above.
- From patient care experiences in the ED, formulate a clinical question - do a literature search and prepare a Critically Appraised Topic.
- Complete a scholastic activity leading to a publishable manuscript. Residents may choose to create their own project or assist in an on-going faculty research project that will qualify for co-authorship.
Residents may choose to do a one-month research elective in either their first or third year to supplement their training and to meet the scholarly activities goals.
