To ensure that each resident gains an appreciation for the progression of certain specific conditions and treatments, the emergency department has a daily follow-up clinic for patients. Here residents and staff follow patients they have cared for and see the results of their care.
Residents assume a progressively responsible role in patient treatment. By the time residents reach their senior year, they are able to reinforce their acquired expertise as they help teach and supervise medical students and first year residents.
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
The Emergency Department at Thomason Hospital has a total of 18,000 square feet - 17,555 sq. ft. of patient care; 280 sq. ft. of administration area; and 165 sq. ft. of conference area. A brand new $35 million dollar ED is in design now to expand to 35,000 square feet by the year 2009. The Emergency Department sees approximately 168 patients in a 24-hour period. A Logicare patient tracking system was installed in June 1999 to improve staff tracking of patient flow through the department, improve privacy of patients being seen and facilitate quality improvement studies in the ongoing attempt to better serve our patient population. Charting in the ED is done on the T System. There is an adjacent 16 head CT scanner and ultrasound available 24 hours/day. There are two brand new Sonosite Titan model ED ultrasounds available for resident and faculty use. Finally the cafeteria is open from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily and residents get free meals if their records are up to date.
The Main area of the ED section has 3 rooms for major trauma and medical resuscitation, 3 trauma "step down" beds, 2 ortho beds, 6 medical examination and 2 cardiac beds.
The West area contains 6 rooms with pelvic beds, 5 ambulatory care rooms, and an ENT room. Most ED beds are equipped with EKG, BP and pulse oximeter monitoring with alarms and central monitoring. There are 6 beds in a separate overflow area (NTS), and an Urgent Care area.
Dr. Dave Bryan is the Medical Director of the Emergency Department. You may contact him at dbryan1@elp.rr.com for questions or comments.
