Department of Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Medicine residency program officially began on July 1st, 1982 under the direction of the Department of Surgery, TTUHSC-EP. The department received provisional accreditation for the residency program from ACGME RRC/Emergency Medicine on July 1, 1983, and received full accreditation status in 1985. In January 1990, the Division of Emergency Medicine became the first accredited Department of Emergency Medicine as recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board within the State of Texas. In September 1993, the Department assumed the directorship of the Division of EMS from the Department of Surgery. Currently we provide medical control to the City of El Paso EMS System, and medical direction and medical control to Border Patrol-El Paso and Marfa Sectors. In September 2010, the Department has restructured its Education division to incorporate a new area of training by creating the Simulation Center which will provide a new avenue for advanced medical and nursing training for faculty, residents, graduates, medicine and nursing students.

Tactical Combat Casualty Course

Description Texas Tech-El Paso is hosting a Tactical Combat Casualty Care Course that is divided into three (3) phases:1) Care under fire, 2) Tactical Field Care, and 3) Tactical Evacuation Care. Training will focus on extraction using low friction dragging techniques, hemorrhage control using the Combat Application Tourniquet, QuickClot gauze, needle chest decompression, surgical airway management and treatment of casualties under challenging hostile conditions.
