Overview

Welcome to the Family Medicine Clerkship!

Family Medicine is defined by the American Academy of Family Physicians as the medical specialty which provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is the specialty in breadth which integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family practice encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.

During your six weeks, you will spend one to two weeks on the inpatient teaching service and four to five weeks in the ambulatory setting. The ambulatory setting may be less controlled than the hospital setting. Patients present with a variety of complaints and the physician may need several visits to identify the real issue. You will be seeing patients that are new to the clinic or long established patients. You will be able to experience evaluating the undifferentiated patient as well as carrying on a pre-existing plan.

Family Medicine is a broad specialty. During these eight weeks, you will be exposed to many types of diseases. The reading as outlined in this syllabus and the teaching time on Tuesday, are designed to strengthen your medical knowledge and to benefit you in many other areas of your education. They will also prepare you for the departmental test at the end of the rotation.

As adult learners, we expect you to play an active role in this learning process. Our faculty, residents and staff are ready to assist you in any way to make this a better learning experience.
