Our Expectations

Right now, El Paso has about 40% fewer doctors than other cities our size, and the need for specialists is growing. Medical school graduates often stay in the region where they studied. With a four year medical school, El Paso will be able to keep more new physicians. Perhaps even more important, young El Paso men and women will be able to become doctors without leaving home.

No longer will El Paso face a physician shortage. In fact, we will have some of the finest medical professionals in the state, nation and the world.

A four year medical school in El Paso will lead the way in border health. The School of Medicine will be a catalyst to enhance first-rate medical care and provide new and exciting opportunities for medical research on issues important to this border region.

From an economic perspective, this is a defining moment for El Paso similar to the coming of the railroad, the presence of Ft. Bliss and the founding of the School of Mines. Like those earlier ventures, this project will take years to complete, but the payoff will be enormous.
