Linda Canada, CNM
Linda Canada, is a clinical instructor and staff nurse midwife in the department of OB/GYN at Texas Tech University Health Sciences in El Paso, Texas since 1989. She received her nursing degree from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO, in 1965 and her midwifery certificate from the Frontier Nursing Service Graduate School of Midwifery in Hyden, Kentucky in 1967. She is certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Ms. Canada sees normal/low risk obstetric and gynecological patients at Texas Tech Medical Center-El Paso and and performs normal deliveries at Thomason Hospital. She is a clinical instructor for the medical students and rotators.
Betsy Portugal, CNM
Betsy Portugal, is a Faculty Associate and Staff Certified Nurse-Midwife in the Department of OB/GYN at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center-el Paso. She is certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She received her Bachelor's and Masters of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Texas-El Paso.
Ms. Portugal offers Nurse-Midwifery care to healthy women throughout their life span. She has a specialized interest in teen pregnancy and well-woman and adolescent GYN care. She sees patients at the Texas Tech out-patient clinic and attends births and follow-up care at Thomason Hospital.
Rachel Shannon, CNM, MSN
Rachel Shannon, is a Clinical Instructor and staff Certified Nurse-Midwife in the Department of OB/GYN at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center-El Paso. She is certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She received her Nurse-Midwifery education at the University of Mississippi and her Masters in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso.
Ms Shannon sees patients at the Texas Tech Outpatient clinics and attends births and follows postpartum patients at Thomason Hospital.
Laura Gillispie, CNM, MSN
Laura A. Gillispie is a Faculty Associate and Certified Nurse-Midwife in the Department of OB/GYN at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - EL Paso. She received her BSN in 1998 from UNM, Masters in Counseling from WNMU, and her Masters of Science in Nursing with a Specialty in Nurse Midwifery from UT-El Paso. Ms. Gillispie is certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She also has a Graduate Certificate as a Nurse Educator. Ms. Gillispie provides care to women from child bearing age through menopause. She sees patients at the Texas Tech out-patient clinic and attends births and follow-up care at Thomason Hospital. She is a clinical instructor for the medical students and residents in the normal realm of women’s health care and pregnancy.
Wreatha Carner, MSN, CNM
Wreatha Carner is a Faculty Associate and Certified Nurse-Midwife in the Department of OB/GYN at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso. She received her nursing degree from the University of the State of New York in Albany, New York. Ms. Carner did her graduate work at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon and was certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives in 1995. She also received a degree in Spanish Language and Linguistics from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. Before joining the team of midwives at Texas Tech, Ms. Carner lived and attended birthing women in Washington State. In El Paso she continues working with women toward their optimal health from pre-conceptual care through prenatal care, birth and postpartum family planning.
