Residency Program

Established in 1973, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso is one of the fastest growing academic medical centers in Texas and one of the main health care providers for West Texas. Highly qualified faculty and staff prepare our residents and medical students for the challenges of practicing medicine in the 21st century. The education takes place in well-equipped clinical facilities as well as the classroom.

Approximately 90% of our graduates join private practices and the rest remain in academic medicine.

Texas Tech El Paso offers training to approximately 180 residents in ten medical disciplines. There are residency programs in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesia, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, General Surgery, Orthopedics and Transitional year. The center also participates in the education of third and fourth year medical students. Our faculty provides outstanding education and supervision while contributing to the health care of a community of approximately 800,000 habitants. Because El Paso is located on the US/Mexico border the combined service population is close to 2.5 million people.

The proximity to the border enriches the education by providing a truly multicultural practice setting with exposure to unique pathology. Persons interested in border health issues and primary care will find that Texas Tech El Paso offers a unique environment for medical education.
