Youth Health Service Corps (YHSC)
June 6th - July 6, 2007
The Office of Border Health would like to encourage high school students to apply for our new program, the Youth Health Service Corps. The YHSC mobilizes high school students interested in the health careers in order to provide volunteer services to different community organizations.
The students will be given the opportunity to provide service to different organizations in El Paso, including: La Posada Home, AVANCE, BienVivir, Project Vida, South El Paso Senior Center, and the Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium. Tied into their volunteer work, the students will be instructed on a number of topics, from practical information like CPR and hygiene, to social and economic issues relevant to health care in our community – most of which will be presented by professionals with first-hand experience. The volunteers will also participate in activities designed to strengthen this knowledge, interact with different health-care professions, and actively design and implement their own service project for each organization by the program’s end.
Over the course of five weeks, the students will accrue up to fifty hours of community service. This will be a great experience for those that recognize the importance of community service. This program is open to all current high school freshman, sophomores, and juniors.
