UBCC

History

The UBCC began operation in 1994 providing comprehensive care for medically indigent
El Paso women with breast disease. In January 1995, the Texas Tech Mobile Mammography Van began bringing
low cost/no cost mammography screening to this population. The Breast Care Center is the only program in
the El Paso community that addresses the total breast care needs of medically indigent women, both through
the UBCC and the Mobile Mammography Van (MMV).
Education in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease is provided to Texas Tech University Health
Sciences Center medical students and residents in training. We actively participate with over 15 community health centers and agencies to provide consultative services for their patients.

The University Breast Care Center (UBCC ) diagnoses and treats over one-third of all new breast cancer patients in El Paso. At the UBCC, services offered range from diagnosis through treatment in a sensitive patient-friendly atmosphere. Streamlined registration, same-day consultation, a soothing atmosphere, and attentive staff all help to alleviate the mental strain of the patient facing breast disease or cancer.

The multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of breast cancer and breast disease includes a team of medical specialists, one of whom will follow the patient through every stage of treatment. Disciplines include pathology, surgery, radiology, oncology and plastic surgery. The UBCC staff consists of two Board Certified surgeons, a medical oncologist (through an agreement with Department of Internal Medicine), a director, an assistant director, three clerical staff, a registered nurse and two certified medical assistants.

Support Service

The University Breast Care Center has a formal Support Service which provides physical and emotional support to our patients in a timely, professional, coordinated, and compassionate manner. The need for physical and emotional support to the patient with breast cancer has been identified as critical to the recovery of the "whole person".
The Support Service is staff by a full-time Coordinator, who sees all patients in the UBCC at the time of diagnosis, in the Hospital at the time of primary surgical therapy, and post-operatively. The Coordinator is involved in community educational programs and conducts a monthly survivors meeting (attendance varies from 15-30 individuals per meeting).

Research

Since we diagnose and treat over 100 new breast cancers each year, we have a patient data base of well over 600 patients. Because of the continued growth of the UBCC, the number of patients to be served will increase exponentially, and an active clinical research program is underway.
