The Mobile Mammography Van (MMV) performs approximately 20 mammographic screening examinations per day. The MMV is equipped with a waiting area, registration desk, two dressing areas, mammography unit, radiological procedure room, film processing equipment, and storage area. The MMV is approved by the Texas Department of Health and the American College of Radiology (Food and Drug Administration).
The MMV makes screening available to women who cannot get mammograms due to economic, transportation, and employment constraints. The Van is on the road Monday through Thursday, providing access at schools, clinics, industrial plants, and community centers. Age 40 is recommended for initiation of screening mammography, a cancer screening technique which has a positive survival benefit as it decreases the death rate by 30-60 %. If there is a family history of cancer, the patient's physician may recommend initiation begin at an earlier age.
MMV is staffed by a Radiology Technician (through a contract with Thomason General Hospital) and a Texas Tech Patient Services Specialist/Driver.
Each mammography procedure includes two views of each breast with interpretation by a Board Certified radiologist (through a contract with the Department of Radiology), who is specifically trained in breast disease.
The patients are also reminded of the need to perform self breast examinations routinely. Literature is provided to patients on breast disease and the staff is available to provide instruction on how to perform self breast examination.
