EXPORT stands for Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach, Research and Training. These projects, initiated by the National Institutes of Health in 2002, focus on health disparities. In West Texas, these differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of disease are drawn along the fault lines of age, race, ethnicity, disability status, income, educational level, and geographic location. Last year the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's Office of Rural & Community Health was awarded a three-year EXPORT grant to study West Texas, a region where health disparities are associated with healthcare under-service on a scale that is both vast and highly diverse.
