Dr. Ahmed E. Badr graduated from Tanta University Medical School in Egypt. He received his post graduate training in Tanta University, Cairo University as well as Vanderbilt University Hospitals. Dr. Badr is fully trained in Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, Pain Management and Critical Care Medicine. He served as a Professor of Neurosurgery and Anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center for the past 10 years before he decided to join TTUHSC this year. Dr. Badr is charged with building the Anesthesiology Department and The Neuroscience Center of Excellence.

Dr. William B. McIlvaine earned his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal Canada, graduating in 1974. After completing his residency in anesthesiology at McGill University Department of Anaesthesia, he did a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. He is currently a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. During his career Dr. McIlvaine has been in both academic medicine and the private practice of pediatric anesthesiology. Dr. McIlvaine came to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2009 from the position of Associate Chair for Clinical Services in the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. McIlvaine is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, the designated Residency Program Director and Director of Pediatric Anesthesiology for the department.

Ralph Nussbaum, DO
Ralph Nussbaum, DO, transferred to Texas Tech El Paso in April 2010 after serving as Vice Chairman for Clinical Anesthesia Services on the Texas Tech-Lubbock campus. Dr. Ralph Nussbaum, DO, earned his medical degree at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1982. In 1984, Dr. Nussbaum served in the USPHS both with the BOP and the IHS. In 1986, Dr. Nussbaum entered Anesthesia training in Cleveland Ohio. He completed his training at the World Famous Cleveland Clinic with specialty emphasis in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. Returning to Texas in 1990, Dr. Nussbaum received a position at Brownsville Medical Center where he had a unique anesthesia experience as he was able to anesthetize Low Land Gorillas on several occasions. In 1992, Dr. Nussbaum relocated up the river, to McAllen were he practiced for 5 years. During this time he was active in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and was among the first physicians to practice pain medicine in the lower valley. At the hospitals request Dr. Nussbaum obtained the training and expertise to establish a Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care Service to address the severe diabetic wounds of the local population. Dr. Nussbaum went to Salt Lake City in 1997,establishing the Utah Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine in Bountiful, Utah.
Dr. Nussbaum is board certified by, American Board Pain Medicine, and the American Board Anesthesiology. In March 2010, Dr. Nussbaum completed the training for Healthcare Mediation at Texas Tech School of Law and received certification, as Dispute Resolution Mediator for State of Texas. Dr. Nussbaum’s medical interest include anesthesia, regional anesthesia, pain medicine, hyperbaric medicine and wound healing, simulation, peri-operative medicine, trauma, resuscitation, hospice and end-of-life care, resident education, ethics, mediation, professionalism, and character development. Dr. Nussbaum currently the Director of Clinical Services at Texas Tech UMC-El Paso.

Dr. Deborah A. Ortega graduated from The University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston in 1992. She received her post graduate training in Anesthesiology at The University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston where she was selected as Chief Resident in her CA-3 year. Dr. Ortega is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. She served as a private practice anesthesiologist at Baycoast Medical Center in Baytown, Texas before she decided to join TTUHSC in 2002. Dr. Ortega is currently an Assistant Professor and is charged with supervision of the Preoperative Clinic and is the Clerkship Director for the department.

Dr. Hana Teissler graduated from Universita Karlova Medical School in Prague, Czech Republic in 1985.
She received postgraduate training in anesthesiology in the Czech republic in Liberec, northern Bohemia and at University of Texas Health Sciences center in Houston Texas. She also received training in Acute and Chronic Pain Management at UT HSC. Dr. Teissler is certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Anesthesiology and by the Czech Republic Board of Anesthesiology. She specializes in acute pain management, regional anesthesia, trauma anesthesia and ambulatory surgery. Prior to coming to Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in El Paso, she served as the medical director of the First Choice Same Day Surgery Center in Grand Junction, Colorado between 2003-2006. Dr. Teissler is currently an Assistant professor at TTUHSC, charged with the building the acute pain management service at the University Medical Center - El Paso and delivering the regional anesthesia training for the anesthesiology residents at TTUHSC.
Her hobbies include reading, theater, skiing, hiking, bicycling, flying a small airplane.

Dr. Joseph Caero received his medical degree and completed his internship at Universidad Mayor de San Simon Medical School in Cochabamba, Bolivia.  After completing an internal medicine residency at Yale University he enrolled in the Anesthesiology Residency Program at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, TX. Following successful completion of his residency he did an Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship.  As a diplomat by the American Board of Anesthesiology and a bilingual (English-Spanish) anesthesiologist, Dr. Caero has more than twenty years of clinical experience in peripartum care.  Dr. Caero is Director of Obstetric Anesthesiology for the department and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology here at TTUHSC.

Dr. Dennis Miller obtained his academic training, beginning with undergraduate work through completion of Anesthesiology Residency at Indiana University. In 1976, he became a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology. He was active for several years in private practice in Anesthesiology and Pain Management. For six years, he served in the Air National Guard as a flight surgeon. He became a commercial pilot and flew commercial jets until he retired from flying in 1997. Dr. Miller left private practice to return to Level I Or Anesthesiology at Maricopa Hospital, Phoenix, AZ in 2005 and then took a position as Director of Anesthesia Services at El Paso V.A. in 2009. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at TTUHSC-El Paso. His hobbies include motorcycling, traveling and bicycling.

 Dr Xing Gao graduated from Case Western University School of  Medicine in 2006.  After his internship, he studied  anesthesiology at Illinois Masonic Medical Center as a resident  physician.  He completed his training in 2010 and continued to  pursue a critical care fellowship at University of Florida Shands  Hospital.  Following graduation from his fellowship, he obtained  a faculty position at Texas Tech University Health Science Center  in El Paso.  He continues to practice clinical anesthesia and will  be involved with Anesthesia Resident Education.  His academic  interests are Critical Care research and medical education.

Dr. Farzad Malekzadeh graduated from Ross University School of Medicine, West Indies in 2000. He received training in the University of Colorado, Denver in 2001 for a preliminary specialty in Surgery. He completed his post graduate training in Anesthesiology at Texas Tech University Health Science Center -School of Medicine, El Paso in 2005. During that time he was appointed Chief Resident in 2004. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Malekzadeh is currently an Instructor for the Department of Anesthesiology.
