Department of Anesthesiology - El Paso

Residency Program Overview

A Message From The Program Director William McIlvaine, M.D.

On July 1, 2011, we will begin our residency program in Anesthesiology with three CA-1 residents (Class of 2014) and three CBY-A interns (Class of 2015). This promises to be an exciting time for faculty, staff and students as we occupy our new offices and begin using our new departmental library and teaching facilities. Our first site visit in 2010 produced an initial two year accreditation from the ACGME. We will have our next site visit in the Fall of 2012.

The news from around the campus is equally exciting. The Medical School has just completed its LCME site visit. The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine has announced the members of the Class of 2015 who will begin classes in July 2011. Our new operating rooms at University Medical Center are open and in full use. The construction of the El Paso Children’s Hospital is on time and on budget with occupancy and grand opening planned for February 2012. Please follow the construction webcam at www.umcelpaso.org.

As we begin the program for our new residents we are looking to our next applicants for the CBY-A year starting July 2012. Our department seeks applicants who have the personal drive and intellectual curiosity to demonstrate exemplary academic performance in medical school and beyond. The individuals we invite to join our team will engage with the faculty in building the department and the training program.

We offer a variety of clinic experiences in our border community which is the second safest city in the United States with a population greater than 500,000. El Paso, west Texas and southern New Mexico are known for their wide diversity of peoples and cultural opportunities. Two nations and three states share a common border here.

Exceptional residents who complete our program will be considered for future faculty positions. We are looking for the best. Please review our website to meet the team and understand our future. Call or email me directly if you have any questions about our department, our hospitals, our medical school and our city.
