A Message From The Program Director
Anthony Han, MD, PhD |
Welcome to the anesthesia residency program at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso. We are a relatively new anesthesiology program having accepted our first class of residents in 2010. Primarily based at University Medical Center, El Paso, a level 1 trauma center, residents in our program care for patients with all types of illnesses in the operating rooms, pain clinic, and critical care units during their training. El Paso is an international community with a metropolitan region of approximately 2.5 million. Located in the far west of Texas, El Paso enjoys a pleasant climate, desert, mountains and vibrant growth. El Paso is a safe city well suited for families. The department has individuals specialized in all anesthetic disciplines including critical care medicine, pediatrics, pain medicine, and cardiac anesthesia. The department houses an NIH funded laboratory focused on brain injury related to our interest in trauma care. We welcome your interest in our program. Some of our highlights include: Regional Anesthesia: Our goal is a pain free hospital and we incorporate regional anesthesia as a “way of life”. Ultrasound guided regional blocks are routine as are peripheral nerve block catheters. A dedicated team manages the acute pain service of which residents are a part. Critical Care Medicine: Residents rotate through our SICU where anesthesiologists and surgeons work together to advance patient care. Pain Medicine: We have an active pain medicine department where fluoroscopically guided blocks are routinely performed. Pediatric Anesthesia: Our team of pediatric anesthesiologists provides care at the El Paso Children’s Hospital located on the UMC El Paso campus. Educational Philosophy: Resident education is paramount in our department. A full staff of nurse anesthetists is used to ensure that resident activities are designed to best address their educational rather than service needs. Please visit our departmental website for more information about our anesthesia residency program. Anthony Han, M.D.
