Texas Tech Anesthesiology Chairman Among 1,259 Initiated Into American College of Surgeons
Ahmed Badr, M.D., FACS, FCCM, professor of neurosurgery and anesthesiology, and chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, was among 1,259 initiates from around the world who became Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) during convocation ceremonies at the College’s 95th annual Clinical Congress in Chicago recently.
Dr. Badr received his medical degree with honors from Tanta University School of Medicine in Tanta, Egypt and later a master’s degree of surgical sciences with honors. A residency in neurosurgery was also completed from Tanta in 1988. He completed a residency in anesthesiology with subspecialty training in neuroanesthesia from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee in 1996. Dr. Badr also completed a fellowship in critical care medicine from the Department of Anesthesia at Vanderbilt University in 1998. He is board certified in anesthesia and critical care medicine.
Dr. Badr came to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in 2008 from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi, where he served as professor of neurosurgery, professor of anesthesiology, as well as director of the Neuroscience Critical Care Unit and director of Neuroanesthesia. Dr. Badr was also one of two key neurosurgeons there who developed the Neurotrauma and Stroke programs.
Meeting the College’s stringent membership requirements earns the Fellows of the College the distinguished right to use the designation of “FACS” (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after their names.
The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The College has approximately 77,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
