Stephen W. Borron, MD, MS, FACEP, FACMT

Program Director, Medical Toxicology Fellowship Program

Stephen W. Borron MD, MS, FACEP, FACMT, a West Texas native, serves as the Program Director of the Medical Toxicology Fellowship Program at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and Associate Medical Director of the West Texas Regional Poison Center at University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC). Dr. Borron is also a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at TTUHSC.  He graduated from the Texas A&M University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1984 with a Doctor of Medicine degree and from the University of Cincinnati in 1992 with a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health.

Dr. Borron is board certified in Emergency Medicine, Preventive Medicine (Occupational Medicine) and Medical Toxicology.  He has over 20 years of experience, including emergency department care in Level I trauma centers, poison center services, toxicology intensive care unit, and both clinical and laboratory research.  He is Medical Editor-In-Chief of ToxED and one of three editors of Haddad & Winchester's Poisoning and Drug Overdose, 4th Edition.  He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications.  Dr. Borron is fluent in English, French and Spanish. 

John F. Haynes Jr., MD, FACEP, ABMT

John F. Haynes, Jr., MD, is a native of El Paso.  He is the Head of the Division of Medical Toxicology for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, he also serves as the Associate Director of the Medical Toxicology Fellowship Program. In addition, Dr. Haynes is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology and the Medical Director of the West Texas Regional Poison Center at University Medical Center of El Paso. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at El Paso and he received his Medical Doctorate in 1980 from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio.  He completed post graduate residency training in emergency medicine at the LAC+USC program in Los Angeles and the program at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio..  He completed fellowship training in medical toxicology with Dr. Wayne Snodgrass at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Dr. Haynes has over 20 years of clinical, teaching and research experience in both emergency medicine and medical toxicology.  He has served as the Medical Director of the WTRPC since it began operations in 1994.  He has helped develop an extensive network of collaborating professionals and organizations who together, work on environmental and occupational toxicology issues on both sides of the US/Mexico border.  Dr. Haynes is fluent in English and Spanish.

Leo Artalejo III, Pharm.D

Director, West Texas Regional Poison Center

Leo Artalejo III, Pharm.D, is the Director of the West Texas Regional Poison Center at University Medical Center of El Paso (WTRPC) since it began operations in September 1994.  He graduated from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy and the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy in 2004 with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Dr. Artalejo has over 40 years of extensive clinical and management experience to include: poison center services, intensive care pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, oncology pharmacy, nutritional care, military pharmacy, administrative services and research.

Gilbert Parra Pharm.D

Senior Certified Specialist of Poison Information,  West Texas Regional Poison Center

Gilbert Parra joined the Armed Forces as a Medic in the Navy in 1970.  He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Houston in 1982 and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of New Mexico in 2005.  Dr. Parra was hired at the West Texas Regional Poison Center as a Specialist in Poison Information in 1995 and became a Certified Specialist in Poison Information in 1996.  He has been a preceptor for PharmD Interns from the University of Texas at Austin, University of Houston, Texas Southern University, University of New Mexico and Creighton University.  He was selected by his students as the Pharm.D Preceptor of the year for the city of El Paso in 2002 and the Pharm.D Preceptor of the Year for the State of Texas in 2003.  He is an active member of the Texas Pharmacy Association.

Salvador Baeza, Pharm.D

Certified Specialist of Poison Information, West Texas Regional Poison Center

Salvador Baeza has been a Specialist of Poison Information at the West Texas Regional Poison center (WTRPC) in El Paso since 2002.  He completed his pre-pharmacy coursework at Angelo State University before receiving his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in 2001.  He completed a Pediatric Pharmacy Residency before joining the WTRPC.  He was certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers as a Certified Specialist of Poison Information in 2003.

In 2007, Dr. Baeza became recognized as a Diplomat of the American Board of Applied Toxicology which provides specialty recognition to professionals who demonstrate exceptional knowledge, experience and competence in applied clinical toxicology.  He is a member of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, American Board of Applied Toxicology, American Association of Poison Control Center's SPI Committee, along with other pharmacy organizations.  Dr. Baeza coordinates numerous projects and clinical trials for the center and assists with the teaching of pharmacy interns and physician residents during their toxicology rotation. 

Emilio Saenz

Research & Program Manager,  West Texas Regional Poison Center

Emilio Saenz is the Program and Research Development Manager for the West Texas Regional Poison Center at University Medical Center of El Paso (WTRPC).  He is involved in the education, public relations, marketing, financial, research and special projects for the WTRPC.  He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Park University in 1999.  Mr. Saenz has been working at the WTRPC since 1999.  In that time, he has participated in the planning of many special events such as the Toxicology Has No Borders Conference, the Poison Jungle Safari, the Poison Prevention Week Poster Contest, the Tox Box, the Public Educators Regional Hispanic Outreach meeting and many others.

He is involved in several national and local organizations and is a member of the American Association of Poison Control Centers Public Education Steering Committee.  He is also a member of the local Safe Kids coalition and the Local Emergency Planning Committee. 

Valerie Sanchez

Program Coordinator, Medical Toxicology Fellowship Program

Valerie V. Sanchez was born in El Paso, Texas.  She received a Bachelor of Human Biology degree from Stanford University in 2006 and a Master of Health Administration degree from the University of Southern California in 2008.  Upon graduation, Valerie completed an Administrative Residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California.  Having recently joined the Division of Medical Toxicology, Valerie serves as the Program Coordinator.  Before joining Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Valerie worked in dental operations and program management.
