Welcome to the Family Medicine Clerkship!
What happens during the third year Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM) curriculum?
The third year of the PLFSOM curriculum provides richly diverse and varied patient care experiences in primary care, specialties and subspecialties. Clinical experiences take place in the core rotations such as family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery. The rotations are grouped into integrated 16 week blocks: Obstetrics/Gynecology and Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, Family Medicine and Surgery.
What is the Family Medicine & Surgery Block?
This is an integrated 16 week block during which students will be exposed to both Surgical and Family Medicine services. During the Family Medicine rotation, students will spend 4 weeks at the Texas Tech Family & Community Medicine Clinic on Kenworthy and 2 weeks with a community Family Physician. While on the surgery rotation, students spend 6 weeks on general surgery and 4 weeks on electives. Students are to spend no more than four weeks in any one discipline. At the end of the 16 weeks they will take the Family Medicine and Surgery NBME.
What is a community rotation and what is required from these visits?
Students spend two weeks with a community Family Physician. It is approximately 3 to 3.5 days per week due to other required commitments such as their longitudinal selective, teaching sessions and more. Students have the chance to see a community Family Physician in action! Students will see patients and discuss them with their preceptors. Preceptors will intermittently observe them interviewing and examining patients. Students will discuss their management plans and revisit their clinical schemes. It is the preceptors chance to be an educator and role model for this new generation of students. Partnership Clinics & Community Faculty
Family Medicine Longitudinal Selective:
Students are also required to complete a weekly ½ day longitudinal selective in either Sports Medicine, Prenatal Care, Geriatric Care or Chronic Disease Management, all supervised by campus based Family Medicine faculty. FM Longitudinal Information
