Department of Family and Community Medicine
Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is proud to offer the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship through the Department of Family and Community Medicine. We are an ACGME accredited program in Sports Medicine and take great pride in our treatment of athletes and education of Sports Medicine Fellows within the El Paso region.
Our goal is as follows:
The Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship strives to create an educational experience in Sports Medicine that will enrich the fellow in the many facets of caring for athletes. Through this experience, the fellow will develop skill, knowledge and proficiency in the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses.
To obtain this high level of education, our program will expose the fellow to variety of dynamic sports medicine environments:
The Clinic - Our home Sports Medicine Clinic is situated in Northeast El Paso and is open to athletes from all walks of life. Our facility boasts access to full radiology services from x-rays and ultrasounds to CT's and MRI's, in addition to a full rehabilitation center. All just down the hall from our examination rooms.
The Training Rooms - Our program has partnered with a myriad of high schools, the El Paso Diablos and the University of Texas at El Paso, and participates in training room clinics which offer firsthand exposure to athletes and their injuries and illnesses.
The Field - We provide our fellows with a variety of "on field" experiences from football games to the El Paso Marathon to adventures races. Through these experiences the fellows will gather skills that will serve as the basis of their onsite or on field management of athletes and their needs.
In addition to these environments, the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship in El Paso boasts on more environment......the Wilderness.
The Wilderness - Dr. Islas is the current President of the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) and his interest in Wilderness Sports and Adventure spills over into our fellowship. The fellows will be exposed to a variety of wilderness-specific lectures and discussions and will gain skills in regards to the management of athletes in wilderness settings. Subjects such as wilderness first aid, extrication guidelines and wilderness medicine improvisational techniques will be taught. In addition, an agreement between the fellowship and the WMS has been forged to provide the fellow credits for the wilderness medicine lectures received during their training towards the WMS - Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine degree.
