Department of Psychiatry
Overview
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry provides primary care in the realm of psychiatry, and educates medical students and residents within this area. The department also collaborates with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine's Center of Excellence in Neurosciences in a quest to better understand and treat specific psychiatric conditions prominent in the Hispanic community. Patients are seen in the outpatient clinics located at the El Paso Psychiatric Center, which is located on campus (See below).
The Psychiatric Residency Program once again received full accreditation in 2010 for the next five years. In addition to the residency and medical student programs, the Department of Psychiatry obtained the approval of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to begin a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program, which began on July 1, 2011.
The Department continues to collaborate with several entities in the community including the Veterans Administration, El Paso Sleep Center, Texas Department of Juvenile Service, University Medical Center and the El Paso Psychiatric Center whereby the medical students, residents and other health professional students get a varied training experience in inpatient and outpatient psychiatry.
Patient Care
Texas Tech Physicians (TTP) brings together the largest network of physicians and health care professionals in West Texas. Because our physicians are also teachers, they remain up-to-date on new treatments and diagnostics, not only to care for their patients, but to pass that knowledge on to resident physicians, physicians studying in fellowships and medical school students. This means our patients receive the quality healthcare they deserve.
TTP Department of Psychiatry offers treatment to children, adolescents and adults for a multitude of conditions including:

Michael A. Escamilla, M.D.,

Dr. Escamilla is committed to the training and development of researchers in the fields of psychiatry and genetics. He designed and directs two training programs (funded by the National Institutes of Health) for training of post-doctoral and Predoctoral fellows. He has taught medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and the University of California, San Francisco and has served as a primary mentor on several graduate school dissertations for students at UTHSCSA and other schools in South Texas, Mexico and Costa Rica. Outside of his primary work on mental illnesses, Dr. Escamilla's work also includes research on medical (non-psychiatric) genetics, including diabetes, dental illnesses and chromosomal abnormalities.
