Research activity concerns studying modulatory effects of chronic drug administration or disease states on cardiovascular function. One area involves study of the cardiovascular effects of diabetes mellitus. There are two areas of focus. The first involves the ability of the diabetic state to induce atherosclerosis. The primary goal of this research is to characterize the trigger for vascular proliferation with the atherosclerotic state. The second area involves diabetic-induced alterations in cardiac receptor-adenylyl cyclase systems. The primary goal of this second area involves correlating alterations in chronotropic, inotropic, responses with alterations in receptor density, cyclase coupling, cyclase activity, and calcium utilization. An additional area of research is the study of the ability of PPARgamma ligands (drugs used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes) to induce lipid sequestration in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells. The primary interest of these studies is to determine if these drugs induce phenotypic changes in vascular smooth muscle resembling adipose tissue or foam cell formation.

Areas of interest include:
1. PPARgamma ligand - induced lipid sequestration in cultured VSMC.
2. Diabetes-induced atherogenesis;
3. Role of oxidative stress in the enhanced proliferative response of diabetic VSMC;
4. Diabetes–induced cardiac failure;
5. Hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects of taurine in Type II diabetic patients
6. Propranolol withdrawal-induced supersensitivity;
7. Reserpine-induced supersensitivity;
