Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The Printing Center at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is showing its true colors: Red, Black & Green.
By obtaining our Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody Certification, the TTUHSC Printing Center is strengthening its commitment to the environment, and allowing our customers to do the same!
Utilization of FSC and Rainforest Alliance certified papers shows the world that we are dedicated to Responsible Forest Management, thus providing a way of using trees and non-timber forest products to meet people's ever-increasing need for lumber, paper and other products without degrading forest ecosystems.
We are able to provide FSC Certified printed matter to any customer desiring their order to carry the well-known and respected certification mark. In addition to the FSC mark, customers will also be offered the option to add the Rainforest Alliance mark to their FSC-certified jobs.
Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. FSC certification provides a credible link between responsible producers and consumers of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.
FSC Certification is the gold standard of programs designed to promote total transparency in the use of sustainable materials and their processing within the paper and printing industries. This program will blend well with the efforts to promote sustainability within the Texas Tech community.
In addition to FSC Certification, the TTUHSC Printing Center also features a number of other environmentally friendly print options. Our direct-image production equipment, including HP Indigo 5500 digital presses, allow us to avoid the use of water in the printing and clean-up processes while delivering high quality printing in a fast-paced environment. Plus, the additions of our Indigo presses have made true on-demand printing a reality; printing only what you need saves paper, requires less storage, and is much less expensive. Whereas a conventional offset press might take 200-300 sheets to "get the color up," the Indigos can take as little as one or two sheets. Also, Indigo presses emit fewer VOCs (volatile organic compounds) than other digital presses, which helps to reduce air pollution by minimizing toxic emissions.
On the traditional side, our offset presses use chemistry-free plates which require no baking, special cleaning fluids, or gumming, resulting in less waste material and a more environmentally friendly print shop. To top it all off, we recycle all of our paper trim and metal plates.
