What is FSC Certification?
The intent of the FSC system is to shift the market to eliminate habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples and violence against people and wildlife that often accompanies logging. Just like other forest products, in order to use the FSC logo as an "environmental claim" on paper, the product must have flowed through the FSC "chain-of-custody" from the FSC-certified forest, to a paper manufacturer, merchant, and finally printer who have FSC chain-of-custody certification. Is FSC-Certified paper physically different?
You’d probably be surprised at how many of the papers you are familiar with are FSC certified. The only difference being a guarantee that the certified paper was harvested or recycled in an environmentally responsible manner. If you have already used one of the brands which are now FSC-certified, rest assured that the print quality and appearance will not be any different… it’s the same paper. Please check with HSC Printing Center to verify stocking quantities of your favorite FSC-certified paper.
Will FSC-Certified paper cost me more money?
So far, all of our suppliers have not been charging more for FSC certified paper.
Can I purchase FSC-Certified paper elsewhere and have HSC Printing Center print the FSC logo?
No. Due to the FSC rules that HSC Printing Center must work under, we must purchase the paper in order to document the chain of custody and obtain approval for printing the logo on each and every specific job.
Are print buyers required to specifically ask for FSC certification when they are requesting a printing estimate or placing a print order?
Yes. We need to confirm the paper is available and that internal controls are followed to assure that the approval process goes smoothly.
Does my company have to be certified in order to buy?
No, in order to use any FSC trademarks, including the FSC logo, initials "FSC", or phrase "Forest Stewardship Council" on a printed piece, only HSC Printing Center, as a printer, must have chain-of-custody certification. We will take care of choosing and placing the proper logo for your printed matter or you can choose using the logo guidelines. Without this certification, no claims can be printed regarding the FSC-certified content of the paper.
HSC Printing Center has made as substantial investment to create an authorized Chain-of-Custody plan throughout our shop so that we would be able to print on FSC certified paper. Our commitment to being a green printer will allow you, as a print buyer, to easily represent your firm’s environmental concerns.
What should I know about FSC-certified printing?
Carrying the FSC-certification logo on your print products tells the world that you support the highest social and environmental standards in the market where you use paper. Your purchase of FSC-certified paper and print products contribute to conservation, responsible management, and community level benefits for people near the forests that provide your paper. The U.S. is the largest market for paper products in the world, producing 90 million tons of paper annually and, in-turn, consuming about 100 million tons. Despite improved technologies for refining post-consumer pulp, virgin fiber is still a significant requirement, as only 35% of current consumption is met by using recycled fiber; in addition, approximately 25% of recovered fiber is exported out of US markets. Roughly 25% by volume of timber cut annually in the US is used for paper production. While recycled fiber is a key element of the traditional model for responsible consumption, it is becoming increasingly clear that forest management in the production of the wood used in paper manufacturing, has more fundamental importance than even recycled fiber. The use of alternative fibers, chemical treatment and resulting effluence are other factors important to the responsible purchasing of paper and board.
Why should I use FSC-Certified printing?
The environmental benefit of printing an FSC piece is the sustainable management and preservation of forests. The marketing benefit is a tangible demonstration of your concern for the environment, which ideally is simply one of the university’s efforts to minimize its negative impacts on the planet.
