Summer Accelerated Biomedical Research Program (SABR)

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers the Summer Accelerated Biomedical Research (SABR) Internships for students interested in pursuing a career in basic biomedical research. The SABR Internships are intensive, 10-week opportunities for students to perform basic biomedical research in the laboratory of a faculty sponsor. Interns are paid a stipend on a competitive basis. Internships may be completed with mentors in several of the basic science departments (Cell Biology & Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology, Pharmacology & Neuroscience, and Cell Physiology and Molecular Biology). Selection criteria are academic record, recommendations of undergraduate mentors, and motivation for post-graduate studies (as determined from a one-page statement of future educational goals, and possibly personal interviews).

Since its beginning in 1998, over ninety students have participated in SABR. Some students have come from as close as Texas Tech University or as far away as Turkey, Armenia, and France. A significant number have entered Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center as students or employees.
