Rehabilitation counselors focus on the whole person, including family, work and social relationships as well as physical and psychological aspects. Approximately 20 percent of the people in the United Sates have acquired one or more disabilities due to disease, injury or congenital causes. Despite legislation, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, the unemployment rate among working-age people with disabilities is around 70 percent. Rehabilitation counselors work one-on-one to assist people with physical, emotional or learning disabilities to use their own resources and opportunities to meet their developmental, vocational, and educational needs. This is achieved through the provision of individualized services such as counseling, advocacy, assessment, medical and psychological services, independent living skill development, and career and job training.
