Anti-Spam FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Barracuda Spam Firewall
Below are common questions and concerns regarding the spam firewall service used by TTUHSC.
Which operating system platforms support the spam firewall service?
Because the Barracuda appliance and service runs at the server level and deflects spam before it reaches the customer's inbox, there are no operating system prerequisites for the end user.
Which email clients support the spam firewall service?
Because the Barracuda appliance and service runs at the server level, there are no email client prerequisites for the end user. However, the Barracuda Microsoft Outlook plug-in does require Microsoft Outlook 2002, 2003 or 2007. While customers using Mac, Linux, and Outlook Web Access will not be able to take advantage of the Outlook plug-in, the Barracuda appliance will deflect spam for these customers before it reaches their inbox.
I am using Microsoft Outlook 2002, 2003 or 2007 but the Barracuda Microsoft Outlook toolbar does not appear near the top of the Outlook window. How do I get the toolbar and buttons to appear in Outlook?
As with any plug-in, occasionally an error may occur in Outlook which may disable a plug-in. In Outlook 2002 and 2003, choose About Microsoft Office Outlook in the Help menu to view a list of disabled plug-ins or add-ins. In Outlook 2007, choose Disabled Items in the Help Menu. Enable the Barracuda Networks add-in. Restart Outlook. The toolbar should now appear.
Why am I receiving more spam than I should or that others don't seem to receive?
Although the spam firewall service will prevent a majority of spam, based on the standard default configuration, additional options can be enabled to allow the service to become more aggressive in combating spam. Enabling the Quarantine and setting more aggressive scoring levels will help tag potential spam or divert it to the Quarantine.
To access your Barracuda Spam Firewall Quarantine and Preferences, enter your eRaider username and password at https://spammgr.ttuhsc.edu. Click on the Preference tab and the Quarantine Settings heading. Under Quarantine Enable/Disable, choose Yes to Enable Quarantine then click Save Changes. Next, click on the Spam Settings heading. Under Spam Scoring, choose No to not Use System Defaults. Set the score values as follows, Tag: 4, Quarantine: 6, Block: 9, click Save Changes, then Log Off.
Keep in mind that where and how you use your TTUHSC email address greatly affects the potential for spam. Limit your TTUHSC email address to just business related use. Excessive and haphazard use of your TTUHSC email address only increases it's circulation and the potential for spam. Also remember that spam outbreaks can cause a sudden spike in the amount of spam we receive. These spikes should be short lived as Barracuda works to respond to these outbreaks.
How do I check my Quarantine and choose whether or not to deliver quarantined email to my inbox?
Access your Quarantine Inbox by logging onto https://spammgr.ttuhsc.edu. Select email that IS NOT spam then click Classify As Not Spam. If you wish to whitelist the sender, click Whitelist. Otherwise, just click Deliver. Select email that IS spam, click Classify As Spam then Delete.
How often should I check my Quarantine?
You can set how often you are notified whenever email is quarantined in your Barracuda Spam Firewall Preferences. Quarantined messages older than 30 days are automatically deleted. It is recommended that you check your Quarantine once a week to prevent wanted email from being lost.
How do I permanently block or allow email from a specific sender?
You can maintain your Whitelist and Blacklist in your Barracuda Spam Firewall Preferences. Simply add any email address to either the Whitelist to always allow or to the Blacklist to always block. Any email address in your Outlook Contacts will be automatically added to your Whitelist, as will any email address you send to.
