Project Calendar and After Hours Outages

Note: This page will be updated with specific dates of down times as soon as they are known.

Outages (Last updated 8/29/2008 10AM CDT)

All security updates performed on edge closet switches at the Lubbock campus have been completed .

The Core Switch and Edge Switch Closet upgrades have been completed at the Lubbock, Odessa and El Paso campuses. Core Switch and Edge Switch Closet upgrades in Amarillo will begin soon and any outages will be posted as information is made available.

Type of Outage: Wireless Outages

Location: Lubbock Campus

The wireless site survey has been completed at all campuses. The next phase in our network upgrade is the wireless network. Beginning this week, contractors will be working throughout the Lubbock campus (except ACB and Medical Pavilion where the wireless installation is complete) to install additional cabling and wireless access points. This is the first of three parts. While the contractors will attempt to do all their work using the hallways and interstitial areas, there will be times they will have to enter office areas. We apologize for this inconvenience, but it is necessary to deploy our new wireless network. Please pass this information along to your areas.

Below is the tentative schedule for each part of the wireless deployment:

Part I - (8/25-9/30) Pull new cables to attach additional wireless access points.

Part II - (10/1-10/31) Install the new wireless access points.

Part III - (11/1-11/30) Deploy new wireless profiles on wireless devices.

We will begin Part I this week. We anticipate the cabling to be completed by the end of September. Part II will begin around the 1st of October and last approximately 3-4 weeks. Contractors will need similar access to hallways and offices as in Part I. Any wireless outages or changes will be posted as soon as information is made available.

***SCHEDULE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE***

Outages Types

Lubbock Campus Core Switch Outages - These outages are the most disruptive. When the Lubbock Core switches are down, WebCT, email, IDX, Baseline Web, and all other services hosted in Lubbock will be unavailable for ALL campuses. However, regional campuses should have network access to the Internet and to other regional campuses during Lubbock Core switch outages. These outages will in most cases not begin until after 7PM CDT (6PM MDT) and not last more than 10 hours. We anticipate these outages will end by 4/13/2008.

Regional Campus Core Switch Outages - When the regional campus core switches are down, the regional campus network and all local regional campus resources (servers, network printers, network file shares, etc) will be unavailable. These outages will in most cases not begin until after 7PM local time and not last more than 10 hours. We anticipate that these after-hours outages will not last more than a week at each regional campus.

Edge Switch Closet Outages - When an edge switch closet is down, any PCs and printers attached to those switches cannot access the network or any network resources (e.g.,the Internet, network printers, servers, and applications like IDX, Baseline Web, TechSIS, TechFIM, WebCT, etc.) These outages will in most cases begin at 6PM local time and not last more than 10 hours.

Wireless Outages - WAPs will be out of service whenever the edge switch the WAP is attached to is down or the WAP is being replaced. Wireless access in the area(s) serviced by a given WAP(s) will be unavailable during these times.

Definitions

Edge Switch - Edge switches connect PCs and printers in offices, clinics, and classrooms to the core switches. Edge switches are located in edge switch closets.

Edge Switch Closet - Edge switch closets are small rooms housing networking equipment located throughout all TTUHSC campuses. A given edge switch closet usually contains many edge switches which service from 100-500 PCs. There are over 75 network closets in the TTUHSC network (counting regional campuses). All equipment in a given closet will be replaced in a single night. Plans are to do multiple closets every other night with equipment configuration and staging in the interleaved days.

Core Switch - Core switches connect all edge switches to the main network. When a core switch is down, all edge switches attached to that core switch are down.

Wireless Access Point (WAP) - WAPs provide access to the network via a wireless connection. A typical WAP provides wireless network coverage to a circular area within a 150 foot radius. TTUHSC currently deploys 190+ WAPs that support 802.11A/B. They will be replaced with new Nortel WAPs that support 802.11A/B/G.
