Community Location
The Permian Basin is a large area in West Texas, approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long, reaching south of Lubbock and extending west into the southeastern counties of New Mexico. The cities of Midland and Odessa serve as the center of the wide-spread region that is home to a thriving oil and natural gas industry. In addition, both cities serve as the regional hub for health care. The 2006 census estimates the Permian Basin has a population of 545,889.

During the late 70s, several Odessa citizens rallied in the community and at local football games to petition the state legislature to consider Odessa as a regional campus site. In 1979, the School of Medicine began operations in the basement of Medical Center Hospital. Today, the regional campus houses the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and School of Allied Health Sciences, serving all of the Permian Basin communities. In 2007, under the direction of Dr. John Jennings, regional dean, the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health expanded to the Permian Basin.
