Book of the Month
As a PsychiatryOnline subscriber, you get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI bookstore.
December's feature is Trance and Treatment: Clinical Uses of Hypnosis, Second Edition, by Herbert Spiegel, M.D., and David Spiegel, M.D., winner of the 2004 Arthur Shapiro Award for the Best Book on Hypnosis.

What is hypnosis? Despite widespread misconceptions, hypnosis is not a treatment in itself; instead, it is a facilitator-a useful diagnostic tool that can help the practitioner choose an appropriate treatment modality and accelerate various primary treatment strategies.

The second edition of Trance and Treatment (first published 25 years ago) is rare in the literature because it is written to provide both beginning and seasoned practitioners with a brief, disciplined technique for mobilizing and learning from an individual's capacity to concentrate. Putting to rest both exaggerated fears about hypnosis and overblown statements of its efficacy, this compelling volume brings scientific discipline to a systematic exploration of the clinical uses and limitations of hypnosis.

The masterful yet practical clinical methods presented in this volume represent much more than an update of the original classic text. This Second Edition integrates the latest scientific findings on hypnosis as a foundation for clinical practice. Both the clinician and researcher will clearly learn what to do and how to do it. The theory and research bases will facilitate their use beyond the specific examples explicated. This book is essential to practitioners using hypnosis and a marvelous primer for those curious about the clinical uses of hypnosis. - Prof. Arreed Franz Barabasz, Ed.D., Ph.D., ABPP, Washington State University; Editor, International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. You'll have access to Trance and Treatment as a PDF download for the month of December.

TTUHSC Libraries Present
Library 2.0

Perhaps you've seen text or image buttons on various websites inviting you to "subscribe via RSS." Subscribing to an RSS feed allows you to automatically receive any new content published on a website: journal article updates, news and special alerts, website updates, current awareness and database search updates. An RSS reader is required to use this service on your computer to receive the new content.
  • Literature searches: Both PubMed and OVID allow you to establish RSS feeds based on your favorite recurring search strategies. This allows you to receive search updates to your RSS feeder. The RSS feed will include all citations retrieved by your search strategy since the last time you were connected to your RSS feeder.
  • Your favorite journals: Many journals now offer RSS feeds as a way for you to keep up-to-date with the contents of the latest issue. For example:
    • Nature: Our subscription to Nature includes access to RSS feeds to 143 NPG journal titles. You specify the NPG title for which you want to receive RSS feeds and you will receive headlines, summaries and links for all new content published within that specific title
    • JAMA: Receive table of contents RSS feeds for JAMA and any of the AMA Archives journals

Podcasts are audio or video media files distributed over the Internet for playback on an iPod, MP3 player or on your computer. Podcasts include a syndication feature known as RSS that allows the content to be automatically updated when subscribers sign up for the podcast. There are many different medical podcasts available. A sampling of podcasts available through Library subscriptions include:
  • New England Journal of Medicine: Podcasts include lectures, audio interviews and article summaries
  • JAMA: Podcasts include "Author in the Room" teleconferences ("bringing clinical evidence into practice") and "Audio Commentary" in which the editor-in-chief summaries and comments on the current issue of JAMA
  • Essential Evidence Plus: Podcasts are a weekly, five-minute discussion about an important recent POEM. The discussion provides additional depth and insight into the issue covered by the POEM synopsis.
  • Access Medicine: The McGraw-Hill weekly podcasts provide updates from many of their core textbooks, such as Harrison's, Hurst's, Schwartz, Williams and Adams and Victor's.
  • Nature: Each week Nature publishes a free audio show which features the best from the week's edition of Nature, including interviews, commentary and analysis.

Book of the Month
As a PsychiatryOnline subscriber, you get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI bookstore.
October brings Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality: Focusing on Object Relations, by John F. Clarkin, Ph.D., Frank E. Yeomans, M.D., Ph.D., and Otto F. Kernberg, M.D.

For therapists treating patients with borderline personality organization, transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) has proven to be a remarkably successful approach that effectively targets the pathology of character. The product of more than 25 years of development, it draws on advances in object relations theory and attachment theory with the goal of not merely treating symptoms but changing the patient's underlying personality and quality of life.

Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality: Focusing on Object Relations describes principles of intervention and con tains a wealth of practical guidelines on how to apply TFP to individual patients on a session-by-session basis. This groundbreaking treatment manual focuses on the analysis of the transference, showing how to help patients relax their defenses and become active participants in the therapeutic process. The authors describe techniques for seeing past the wall of behavioral and cognitive dissonance typically thrown up by the borderline patient, identifying a patient's conflicting self-conceptions and object representations, and immersing oneself in the turbulent currents of the borderline narrative stream while maintaining the clinical distance required to be a constructive force in patients' lives.

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. Look in the lower-right corner for the download link (you might have to scroll down a bit). You'll have access to Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality: Focusing on Object Relations as a PDF download for the month of October.

TTUHSC Libraries System Receives Conservation Bookshelf

The following is a press release from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS):

Lubbock - Treasured objects and artifacts held by the libraries of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center will be preserved for future generations with help from the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, a core set of conservation books, DVDs, and online resources donated by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal funding of the nation's museums and libraries. IMLS and its cooperator, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), will award a total of 3,000 free sets of the IMLS Bookshelf by the end of 2009.

Upon learning of this award, the Executive Director of TTUHSC Libraries, Richard C. Wood observed that "the Montgomery/Douglas collections of art and rare books, the Wheeler collections of artifacts, the Tyner collections of manuscripts and art, the Nau collections of rare books, the Kopetsky collections of rare books, the McConnell collections of books, manuscripts, and realia, the Yoder-Wise collections of artifacts, as well as forthcoming collections for the El Paso campus will all benefit from this bookshelf of resources dealing with their care and preservation."

"We are very pleased to announce the recipients of the IMLS Bookshelf in the second round of competition. These libraries, museums, and archives are in the forefront of our call to action on behalf of America?Aos collections," said Anne-Imelda Radice, Director of IMLS. "According to a recent national survey, our important collections are at great risk, and without them, the American story simply cannot be told to future generations."

The TTUHSC Library system is being awarded this essential set of resources based on an application describing the needs and plans for care of its collections. The IMLS Bookshelf focuses on collections typically found in history or art museums and in libraries' special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers. It addresses such topics as the philosophy and ethics of collecting, collections management and planning, emergency preparedness, and culturally specific conservation issues.

The IMLS Bookshelf is a crucial component of Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action, a conservation initiative that the Institute launched in 2006. IMLS began the initiative in response to a 2005 study by Heritage Preservation documenting the dire state of the nation's collections. The multi-faceted, multi-year initiative shines a nationwide spotlight on the needs of America's collections, especially those held by smaller institutions, which often lack the human and financial resources necessary to adequately care for their collections. For more information on the conservation initiative, please go to http://www.imls.gov/collections.

About the Institute of Museum and Library Services

The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. The Institute works at the national level and in coordination with state and local organizations to sustain heritage, culture, and knowledge; enhance learning and innovation; and support professional development. As a PsychiatryOnline subscriber, you get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI bookstore.
September brings Introduction to Supportive Psychotherapy, by Arnold Winston, M.D., Richard N. Rosenthal, M.D., and Henry Pinsker, M.D.

Part of the groundbreaking Core Competencies in Psychotherapy series edited by Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., this concise yet comprehensive work will be a trusted guide for learning how to do supportive psychotherapy. Offering a bedrock of knowledge from which to develop essential skills, the book provides extensively detailed clinical vignettes to show how to establish and maintain a positive therapeutic alliance, understand and formulate patients' problems, set realistic treatment goals with patients, and talk with patients. This practical volume will be immediately useful among an exceptionally wide audience: students in introductory courses, beginning therapists navigating the therapeutic relationship with psychotherapy patients, psychiatry residents who need to demonstrate competency in the field, and seasoned practitioners in psychiatry, psychology, social work, occupational and recreational therapy, and medicine.

This book provides a clear, current, and very pragmatic guide to psychiatry's most frequently used psychotherapy. Virtually every page has specific suggestions that both the novice and experienced clinician will value. - Roger Peele, M.D., Chief Psychiatrist, Montgomery County, Maryland; Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

Written by clinicians who work with infants and children and their families every day, this reality-based approach addresses the most common and important problems in infant psychopathology (e.g., trauma, sleep, feeding, excessive crying, attachment disruptions), covering models of intervention from pregnancy through infancy, attachment issues, and transgenerational themes.

You'll find topics rarely addressed elsewhere: the theoretical and clinical implications of trauma during early childhood and its effects on emotiona l regulation, cognition, and attachment; the effects of day care and changes in caregivers on infants; and unique commentaries on two case examples by a diverse international panel of clinicians and researchers, illustrating the differences of opinion, approaches, and perspectives that together generate more effective assessment and treatment.

This thought-provoking clinical reference is a "must read" for developmental, child, and adolescent psychiatry educators and practitioners-and nurses, pediatricians, occupational therapists, and clinical social workers-as they help the youngest members of our community through theoretical understanding and practical intervention.

Book of the Month
As a PsychiatryOnline subscriber, you get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI bookstore.
July's feature is Personality-Disordered Patients: Treatable and Untreatable, edited by Michael H. Stone, M.D.

Taking in the entire spectrum of personality disorders-from the DSM "Anxious Cluster" to antisocial personality disorder-this book offers practical guidance for assessing the amenability of patients to psychotherapy. By focusing on which patients are likely to respond well to therapeutic intervention and which will prove most resistive, Personality-Disordered Patients: Treatable and Untreatable can assist clinicians in determining with what kinds of patients they will most likely succeed and with which ones failure is almost a certainty.

"This is vintage Michael Stone, a sophisticated, substantive and consequential book, a logical and scholarly synthesis that provides a sequence of vivid, differentiated and incisive clinical portrayals. Impressive in scope, organization and balance, this eloquently written work comprises a persuasively argued scaffold of practice-oriented proposals that will be of everyday utility to experienced professionals, as well as to psychiatric residents and graduate students-in-training." - Theodore Millon, Ph.D., D.Sc., Dean and Scientific Director, Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology, Coral Gables, Florida

April's feature is Managing Metabolic Abnormalities in the Psychiatrically Ill: A Clinical Guide for Psychiatrists, edited by Richard A. Bermudes, M.D., Paul E. Keck Jr., M.D., and Susan L. McElroy, M.D.

This book addresses an important unmet need of patients with both mental disorders and medical illness?Ainamely, the lack of integration of general medical care with psychiatric care and the related problem of barriers to collaboration and communication among health care providers. Managing Metabolic Abnormalities in the Psychiatrically Ill is the first book to provide a current review of the relationships among psychiatric illnesses, metabolic abnormalities, and treat ment, focusing on how clinicians can tailor care to those doubly-afflicted patients.

"Metabolic disturbances represent perhaps the major medical concern impacting patients with psychiatric conditions, yet many psychiatrists are still struggling with how to best manage these common problems. In this excellent text, Drs. Keck, Bermudes, and McElroy have compiled practical, relevant information for managing metabolic abnormalities and the related medical issues in psychiatric patients that practitioners will find timely, useful and important in their day-to-day practice. The editors have gathered an outstanding group of experts to write clear descriptions and recommendations that are easily incorporated into psychiatric care. I recommend this book highly." - Stephen M. Book of the Month
As a PsychiatryOnline subscriber, you get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI bookstore.
March brings The Early Stages of Schizophrenia, edited by Robert B. Zipursky, M.D., and S. Charles Schulz, M.D.

In sharp contrast to the prevailing belief during the past century that schizophrenia inevitably results in a progressive deteriorating clinical course, research since the early 1980s shows that early intervention can significantly improve the long-term outcome of this complex illness. With very early treatment, many affected individuals can achieve an excellent recovery.

The work of 19 experts in the field of schizophrenia research is available in this single, powerful volume that introduces the concept of early intervention and describes the clinical approaches most likely to facilitate the fullest degree of recovery. With its dramatically different perspective on the potential long-term outcome of a still-baffling illness, this volume is a must-read for mental health practitioners and educators, psychiatry residents, and family members of affected individuals.

New for 2008:
ScienceDirect

The TTUHSC Libraries of the Health Sciences have reached an agreement with Elsevier to provide access to most of the electronic journals in its ScienceDirect database. Coverage is from 1995 (if available holdings go back that far) to date. There will be no more annoying notations concerning the "most recent 12 months only."

As part of this agreement, the TTUHSC Libraries will no longer be receiving print copies of any of the journals included in this agreement.

You may browse the TTUHSC ScienceDirect title list here. Approximately 2,000 titles are available. All of these electronic journals are now available in .

New for 2008:
SpringerLink

The TTUHSC Libraries have entered into a consortial agreement with the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA) and Springer provide electronic access through SpringerLink to approximately 1,800 Springer journals. This includes all of the Springer journals to which the Libraries subscribed in 2007 plus many, many more, including journals which the Libraries were forced to cancel in the 1980s and 1990s. Online coverage begins in 1997, provided that Springer has digitized issues that far back.

As part of this agreement, the Libraries will no longer receive any Springer journals on paper.

For direct access to SpringerLink, click here. All of these electronic journals are now available in .

InfoPOEMs with InfoRetriever Is Now
Essential Evidence Plus

InfoPOEMs with InfoRetriever has been redesigned and renamed Essential Evidence Plus. The scope of this change is indicated in a Wiley-Blackwell press release dated 27 November 2007:
Essential Evidence Plus will continue to feature InfoPOEMs, the highly-regarded daily EBM content alerting service, and the robust EBM search application formerly known as InfoRetriever. The incorporation of two new content resources - EBM Guidelines and e-Essential Evidence - will greatly augment the existing product features and content and position the re-branded resource Essential Evidence Plus as a state-of-the-art content system facilitating EBM practice, increasing clinical efficiency at the point of care, and improving patient outcomes.

Complete implementation of Essential Evidence Plus has been somewhat delayed, but Wiley-Blackwell noted earlier this year that:
. . . you'll notice that the EBM Guidelines resource has already been loaded in to the database and this content will now appear in your search results. EBM Guidelines is a concise, easy-to-use collection of more than 950 Practice Guidelines, more than 3,000 Evidence Summaries, and more than 1,000 images.

We anticipate that the all new e-Essential Evidence resource will be added to the Essential Evidence Plus suite this spring. e-Essential Evidence will be a truly evidence-based reference that will be tightly integrated and hyperlinked to all of the other resources in Essential Evidence Plus, including the Daily POEMs summaries and The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews Abstracts.

Essential Evidence Plus is accessible from the "Databases" pop-out box on the Libraries Home page as well as the TTUHSC Databases and TTUHSC Databases A-F Web pages.
Essential Evidence Plus
Source: Wiley-Blackwell (paid site license)
Description: "Essential Evidence Plus is a powerful electronic resource packed with all of the medical evidence you need to make critical patient care decisions."
Essential Evidence Plus features POEMs:
"POEM stands for Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters.
POEMs have to meet three criteria:
  • They address a question that we face as clinicians.
  • They measure outcomes that we and our patients care about: symptoms, morbidity, quality of life, and mortality.
  • They have the potential to change the way we practice.
Because POEMs are valid, improve important patient outcomes and change what we do, we have an obligation as clinicians to know about them. Essential Evidence Plus makes sure that you know about all the POEMs, all the time."
Note: Before 1 February 2008, Essential Evidence Plus was known as InfoPOEMs with InfoRetriever.

Book of the Month
As a PsychiatryOnline subscriber, you get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI bookstore.
Our first title for 2008 is Core Competencies for Psychiatric Education: Defining, Teaching, and Assessing Resident Competence, by Linda Boerger Andrews, M.D., and John William Burruss, M.D.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) endorsed six General and five Psychiatric Competencies to be attained by psychiatric residents. As a result, these General (patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice) and Psychiatric (brief therapy, behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychotherapy combined with psychopharmacology, and supportive therapy) Competencies are now being phased in for all core residency training pro grams in the United States.

This volume, coauthored by the director and the associate director of general psychiatric residency education at Baylor College of Medicine, is a practical guide for educators working to incorporate the Competencies into their residency programs. It will help training directors and others involved in designing and implementing residency programs to ensure that residents develop all of the Competencies to the level expected of a new practitioner, as required by ACGME.

The book lists the specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes that must be taught for each of the Competencies and provides example components for each. It includes handy "to-do" lists for the program director, rotation coordinator, and course director, as well as forms for verifying resident experience, evaluating psychotherapy supervision, conducting semiannual evaluations, and evaluating residents' progress. It describes techniques for effectively providing feedback to residents and offers example goals and objectives for didactic courses and rotations.

Core Competencies for Psychiatric Education is an indispensable guide for anyone trying to learn how best to teach and assess competency-based psychiatric curricula.
