November brings Changing American Psychiatry: A Personal Perspective, by Melvin Sabshin, M.D.

Psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, other mental health workers, behavioral scientists, and university medical and neuroscience professionals will benefit from this articulate insider's view of post-World War II psychiatry in Changing American Psychiatry: A Personal Perspective, by Melvin Sabshin, M.D. Dr. Sabshin served as Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for 23 years, from 1974 to 1997, during a period of perhaps the greatest change in psychiatry since World War II produced a dramatic modification of practice.

The author describes in detail two extraordinary periods of change, the first stimulated by laudatory efforts to understand the high rate of psychiatric casualties among World War II veterans and to provide treatment for them. Psychiatry grew quickly during the postwar years, considerably influenced by the immigration of many Central European psychoanalysts. Gradually, however, psychiatry began to weaken its ties to medicine and lost much of its public respect. By the 1970s, postwar optimism had been replaced by widespread concern that psychiatric practice was being dominated by unsubstantiated formulations rather than reliable evidence. Psychiatry was dramatically impacted by enormous pressure for therapeutic accountability exerted by a managed care reimbursement system. The profession recognized the need for a new direction and resolved to change.

In the foreword to the book, current APA Medical Director James H. Scully Jr., M.D., notes that Dr. Sabshin has woven a personal journey of the history of the intellectual conflicts and changes in the field of psychiatry in the post-war era, culminating in the remedicalization of psychiatry and the development of the DSM-III.

Dr. Sabshin encourages psychiatric professionals to change the field so it can employ an empirically based "bio-psycho-social" model that has the potential to revitalize the next phase of American psychiatry. He details how the potential for the future of psychiatry can be enhanced by today's practicing professionals, stressing:
the need to incorporate the rapid developments of neuroscience into a professional practice that is increasingly integrated with empirically demonstrated psychological and social influences upon mental illness.
the importance on continued research that is fed back into practice and keeps the professional evidence-based.
the need of psychoanalysis to make its beliefs explicit, formulating hypotheses that can be tested scientifically in order to be employed reliably in evidence-based practice.

October brings Developmental Psychopathology and Wellness: Genetic and Environmental Influences, by James J. Hudziak, M.D.

A major benchmark in the understanding of psychiatric illness in children and adolescents, Developmental Psychopathology and Wellness reports on progress in identifying genetic and environmental influences on emotional-behavioral disorders. A team of 22 international authorities including many trailblazers in the field presents work that changes the way child psychiatry and clinical psychology are conceptualized. These authors presentations debunk misconceptions about depression, antisocial behavior, and other conditions to enhance our underst anding of the causes of child psychopathology and improve the ways we treat these disorders.

Coverage ranges from basic principles regarding the influence of genomic medicine, to gene-environment interaction, to disorder-based examples that show how emotional-behavioral illness and wellness attest to the interaction of genetic and environmental factors over time. The contributors provide new insight into the study of anxious depression, ADHD, autism, and antisocial personality disorders; share studies of such problems as child abuse and childhood worry; and reveal how practitioners can bridge the gap between research and clinical applications. Developmental Psychopathology and Wellness shows that these psychopathologies are not a matter of nature versus nurture or genes versus environment, but rather an intertwining web of them all.

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. You'll have access to Developmental Psychopathology and Wellness as a PDF download for the month of October.

September brings The Physician as Patient: A Clinical Handbook for Mental Health Professionals, by Michael F. Myers, M.D., and Glen O. Gabbard, M.D.

Because physicians are shaped by the expectations and responsibilities of their profession and are especially susceptible to stress and illness, professionals treating them need to be attuned to a host of demands and considerations not applicable to other patients. The Physician as Patient meets that need by combining the perspectives of two seasoned psychiatrists who have been assessing and treating physicians for more than 30 years. Drs. Myers and Gabbard pool their career-long dedication to physician health, counseling, and risk management to demonstrate that, through accurate diagnosis and state-of-the-art treatment, most impaired physicians can recover and return to practice.

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. You'll have access to The Physician as Patient as a PDF download for the month of September.

August brings Professionalism and Ethics: Q & A Self-Study Guide for Mental Health Professionals, by Laura Weiss Roberts, M.D., M.A., and Jinger G. Hoop, M.D., M.F.A.

An interactive, case-oriented approach to mental health ethics, Professionalism and Ethics: Q & A Self-Study Guide for Mental Health Professionals consists of questions and answers that draw on sixteen experts' personal experience in the care of people with mental illness, in mental health research, and in clinical training. Each question presents scenarios that pose an ethical issue: some are narrow and to the point, such as responding to a suspicion of child abuse; others require a more nuanced approach, such as dealing with conflict of interest posed by a pharmaceutical company. Explanations following the questions offer background information about relevant ethical concepts and related legal and clinical considerations. A subsequent section features another set of questions for self-assessment, followed by answers with citations to appropriate references.

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. You'll have access to Professionalism and Ethics as a PDF download for the month of August.

Book of the Month
Subscribers to DSM Premium and DSM Premium Plus at PsychiatryOnline.com get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI Bookstore.
July brings Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Clinical Psychiatry, edited by Mark S. George, M.D. and Robert H. Belmaker, M.D.

As understanding evolves about how different brain regions are involved in carrying out everyday tasks--and in causing brain diseases when they go awry--this book describes a new technology that allows physicians to focally stimulate the brain in awake adults through a non-invasive procedure. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Clinical Psychiatry is an accessible and authoritative review of TMS, a procedure that is showing promise as a treatment in several disorders. Its authors explain how the procedure works, then the latest findings in a wide range of situations-notably in depress ion, but also in other conditions ranging from migraine to stroke recovery.

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. You'll have access to Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Clinical Psychiatry as a PDF download for the month of July.

Annals of Internal Medicine
Service Interuption

Online access to the most recent six months of Annals of internal medicine is temporily unavailable to TTUHSC faculty, staff, and students. The American College of Physicians (ACP) decided to raise the price of the TTUHSC Libraries annual site license from $505 in 2008 to $4500 in 2009, a ninefold increase. The ACP has not responded to inquiries from the TTUHSC Libraries, nor has it provided a copy of the new site license for examination. EBSCO Information Services, the TTUHSC Libraries subscription agent, is attempting to obtain a copy of the proposed new site license.

The TTUHSC Libraries hopes to resolve this problem as soon as possible. In the meantime, articles from the Annals of internal medicine can be requested from the InterLibrary Loan (ILL) office at each campus Library. Information on ILL including an electronic ILL Request Form is available on the Libraries Home page.

Haworth Press Journals Now Available Online From
informaworld

The Taylor & Francis Group has purchased Haworth Press. One happy result of this purchase is that the former Haworth Press journals are now available online at www.informaworld.com. The informaworld Web site is much faster and easier to use than the service previously offered by Haworth Press. Access to back volumes is also more extensive.

The TTUHSC Libraries of the Health Sciences subscribe to the following former Haworth Press titles. These titles are all now available in . Dates are inclusive but should be considered approximate. Haworth genrally published behind schedule and often departed from strict chronological sequence. Authorities often differ on when a particular issue was actually published.

As noted above, Taylor & Francis has also chosen to discontinue publication of a number of Haworth titles.

The TTUHSC Libraries have also acquired Journal of dietary supplements from Informa Healthcare. This is marketed as a successor title to the Haworth Press journal Journal of aging & pharmacotherapy.

Book of the Month
Subscribers to DSM Premium and DSM Premium Plus at PsychiatryOnline.com get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI Bookstore.
April is National Autism Awareness Month, so to help raise awareness we are highlighting Clinical Manual for the Treatment of Autism, edited by Eric Hollander, M.D., and Evdokia Anagnostou, M.D.

Reflecting tremendous gains over the past decade in our understanding of the causes of autism, Clinical Manual for the Treatment of Autism meets the increasing need for clear, up-to-date, and evid ence-based treatment. Internationally known researchers--who are also skilled in treating patients with autism--share treatment approaches they have either developed or thoroughly tested for safety and efficacy.

The book describes in a straightforward manner how to diagnose autism, providing examples and guidelines for evaluation and testing of individuals of all ages and levels of functioning. It then evaluates the appropriate role of various medications for specific target symptoms and individuals: SSRIs and antidepressants, anticonvulsants and mood stabilizers, conventional and atypical antipsychotics, cholinesterase inhibitors, and stimulants and nonstimulants. In addition to pharmacological approaches, the book presents psychosocial treatments, including applied behavior analysis, the DIR/Floortime approach, peer relationship interventions, and educational appro a ches. It also describes complementary and alternative therapies and explores promising new avenues of treatment, making it a state-of-the-art compendium that will help advance the care that people with autism receive.

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. You'll have access to Clinical Manual for the Treatment of Autism as a PDF download for the month of April.

TTUHSC Libraries BioMed Central Policy

As questions continue to be raised about TTUHSC membership in BioMed Central, it seems worthwhile to reprint the following announcement from Richard Wood, Executive Director of Libraries, first published in this space on 16 June 2006:
"TTUHSC Libraries have determined that we will immediately cease participation as members of Biomed Central. This decision is a consequence of several questionable actions on the part of Biomed Central during the last ten days. We had informed Biomed Central of our intent to continue as members of that organization early in May of 2006. Nevertheless, on June 5, 2006, we discovered that the TTUHSC customized link to Biomed Central had been broken and replaced with a message which stated that TTUHSC was NOT a member institution. When we contacted Biomed Central headquarters in Great Britain to complain of this action, we were told that a mistake had been made by them, but that it would be fixed within 24 hours. That conversation took place on June 8. June 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 passed with no correction on Biomed Central's part. In the meantime, Biomed Central began its new business model which included the requirement that submittals for publication in the BMC journals be accompanied by page charges. Heretofore, all submittals by individuals whose libraries were BMC members were published with a waiving of such page charges. One of our own TTUHSC faculty members was informed that he would have to pay BMC page charges in the amount of some $1,500 in order to have his article published. Having marketed itself as a forum for open access, BMC has certainly moved over to the for profit side of things. It was at that point that the TTUHSC libraries decided to cease its $3000 annual subsidization of BMC . It is interesting to note that last year the 15 health sciences center libraries in the states of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were all BMC members: there are currently only 3 who are renewing members of BMC."

BioMed Central's open access journals will remain available to TTUHSC faculty, staff, and students in .

Access to the BioMed Central Home Page continues to be available from the TTUHSC Databases: A-F Web page.

Book of the Month
Subscribers to DSM Premium and DSM Premium Plus at PsychiatryOnline.com get access to a free PDF version of a featured book EVERY MONTH from the APPI Bookstore.
For February, we are excited to bring you Science and Psychiatry: Groundbreaking Discoveries in Molecular Neuroscience, by Solomon H. Snyder, M.D. Dr. Snyder has been instrumental in the establishment of modern psychopharmacology--as a pioneer in the identification of receptors for neurotransmitters and drugs and in the explanation of the actions of psychotropic agents. Science and Psychiatry is a collection of some of his best scientific papers, publications ranging over 40 years that represent important advances in psychopharmacology and molecular biology.

Sol Snyder, as you will learn from reading this collection of some of his best scientific papers, is an immensely creative person--one of the most creative in my generation of scientists. He has made numerous contributions to neuroscience and psychiatry that are not simply original, but often astonishingly so, because when they first appeared they were so audacious and unanticipated. Each of these discoveries has opened up a new area of understanding, and together they have revolutionized the modern study of the brain.--Eric R. Kandel, from the Foreword.

You can access the Book of the Month from the home page, at www.PsychiatryOnline.com. You'll have access to Science and Psychiatry as a PDF download for the month of February.

Part of the acclaimed Core Competencies series edited by Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., January's feature is Competency in Combining Pharmacotherapy and Psychotherapy: Integrated and Split Treatment, by Michelle B. Riba, M.D., M.S., and Richard Balon, M.D.

This essential work provides the ideal text for psychiatry residents who need to develop and demonstrate competency in providing psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy in both integrated (delivered by one professional) and split (delivered in collaboration by two or more professionals) approaches--a competency required by the Residency Review Committee in Psychiatry. This volume will be welcomed by residents and training directors alike as an integral part of all psychiatric residency training programs. It will also be useful to nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, and psychologists.

Clinically effective psychiatrists work with both mind and brain when using medication and psychotherapy. Riba and Balon expertly elucidate the essential clinical principles that facilitate the achievement of clinical competency while maneuvering through mind-brain dualism. Regardless of whether they practice integrated or split treatment, psychiatric residents will greatly improve their outcomes after absorbing this book's excellent lessons.--Bernard D. Beitman, M.D., Chairman and Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Missouri School of Medicine
