About Hablando

Speaking of Women's Health launched a health program for Hispanic women in the fall of 2003, Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer, Spanish for "Speaking of Women's Health". This program addresses the specific health concerns of Hispanic women and their families by educating them about their health, well-being and personal safety in a culturally sensitive bilingual environment including Hispanic speakers and health care professionals.

Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer is presented in both Spanish and English, and includes a knowledgeable keynote speaker, informative educational sessions and numerous essential health screenings. Vital information on important health topics such as mental wellness, sleep debt, fitness/exercise, hormones, self appreciation and wealth of other important wellness information will be available.

Over the past several years, Hablando has been successful at reaching underserved Hispanic women, serving over 2500 participants. Past events have identified women with newly diagnosed diabetes, high cholesterol, abnormal mammograms, hypertension and depression. These women were given potentially life-saving information.

Hablando 2010 will focus on wellness and prevention in the individual. Since women are the nucleus of the family, healthier families will result.

The Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health, an institute of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, is proud to host the 2010 Hablando event in Amarillo, TX. This event will target the underserved and uninsured Hispanic women of the community. Hablando will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 7:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Amarillo Civic Center.
