For National Women’s and Girls’ HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAD)
In 2009, LWBIWH Amarillo received a grant to reach out to the community for NWGHAD. Along with STDs, HIV/AIDS is on the rise among our college-age population.
Seeing the need, LWBIWH teamed up with the Panhandle AIDS Support Organization, the City of Amarillo Health Department, and the Department of State Health Services Region I to hold a campus blitz at 5 regional colleges (Amarillo, Frank Phillips, and Clarendon Colleges; West Texas A&M University; and TTUHSC School of Pharmacy).
Are you positive or are you negative?
This year, 150 people were tested for HIV/Syphilis, and 100% came back negative. In addition, the institute held an awareness rally on March 10. A proclamation was issued at the rally declaring March 10 to be National Women’s and Girls’ HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, followed by a keynote address from Dr. Arlene Hudson and a local HIV-positive female.
Be on the look-out for next year’s National Women’s and Girls’ HIV/AIDS Awareness Day activities!
