Chandice Covington, R.N., Ph.D.

                                           Dr. Chandice Covington

The LWBIWH is honored to have Chandice Covington, R.N., Ph.D., A.P.R.N. (BC), F.A.A.N., as the Thelma Florence Hall Chair for Nursing Excellence in Women’s Health, the Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing’s historic fourth endowed chair.

The aim of the Florence Thelma Hall Chair for Nursing Excellence in Women’s Health is to be a catalyst for the development of women’s health programs in the Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing, the School of Medicine and the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health.  This academic position includes research, clinical, and teaching activities.  The Chair will contribute to the scientific body of knowledge in women’s health.  The Hall Endowed Chair holds an academic appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in the TTUHSC Perry School of Nursing.

Dr. Covington is the first chair appointed within an institute and the first faculty within the School of Nursing to have an appointment with the School of Medicine.

Dr. Covington has an extensive research background in women’s health and was previously the dean of the College of Nursing at University of North Dakota. She has had major research funding from multiple National Institutes of Health entities including the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Nursing Research, with additional funding from NASA, National Indian Health Service, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Her recruitment to TTUHSC lifts us into a new realm of leadership and research within the university.

Dr. Covington plans research in two major areas. In West Texas, she will examine how multiple roles in women’s lives (such as mother, spouse, daughter, worker) influence health, especially sleep debt, and its relation to overeating, risk for diabetes, and cognitive skills. She notes that due to the numerous roles that women play in society, there is often less than optimal time to devote to personal basic needs, such as sleep and a healthy diet. This can have a negative effect on women’s physical health and mental acuity.

On the international front, Dr. Covington’s research will continue to focus on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV via breast milk in Kenya, Africa.

Her hobbies include writing creatively about women and their challenges in life, international travel where health is constantly challenged by the environment and lack of resources.  Her pass-time interests include fly-fishing, music, and reading – especially the newspaper.
