New TTUHSC President Meets New Academic Family
Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent Hance today (April 15) presented the new Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President Tedd Mitchell, M.D., to faculty, staff and students.
Mitchell was named after system officials conducted a nationwide search. Chancellor Hance chose Mitchell for the position from a group of candidates presented to him by the Presidential Search Committee. Texas Tech University Board of Regents approved his appointment April 1.
"Today is a great day that marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center," Hance said. "Dr. Tedd Mitchell possesses tremendous leadership skills and vision for the continued success of our institution. It is my pleasure and honor to introduce Dr. Mitchell as president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center."
Mitchell currently is president and chief executive officer of the Cooper Clinic, an internationally recognized center of excellence for preventive medicine, located in Dallas.
"One of the greatest assets Texas Tech has is its people," Mitchell said. "As the new president of this institution, it is a tremendous honor to not only lead this team of faculty, staff and students, but to also become a part of the wonderful Lubbock and West Texas community."
Mitchell became medical director of the Cooper Clinic in 1991 and president and CEO in 2006. He began writing the weekly column “Health Smart” for USA Weekend in 1998. The publication is found in 600 newspapers across the U.S. reaching about 49 million readers each week.
A fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American College of Physicians, Mitchell earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch. He earned a bachelor's of science degree from Stephen F. Austin University.
Mitchell will begin his duties May 17.
