Have fun, feel better on Healthy Lubbock Day

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Garrison Institute on Aging Healthy Lubbock Initiative recently hosted its fourth annual Healthy Lubbock Day at Maxey Park.

The event brought in several hundred people from the Lubbock community.

Healthy Lubbock Day attendees participated in health screenings, car seat inspections, and fitness demonstrations such as pilates and tai chi.

This year's featured activities included a climbing wall, paddle boats and a bike rodeo. According to the American Heart Association, the number of overweight adolescents and teenagers has been increasing at an alarming rate during the last 20 years. Overweight children are more likely to be overweight adults, but treating childhood obesity may help reduce the risk of heart disease and other diseases.

TTUHSC initiated the Healthy Lubbock program in 2003 as a tool to help community members prevent obesity and related health issues. The Healthy Lubbock Initiative strives to empower individuals to make smart lifestyle decisions for themselves and their families.
