TTUHSC School of Nursing Faculty Member Honored by State for Work in Nutrition

Christina Esperat, RN, Ph.D., FAAN, associate dean for research and practice and The CH Foundation Regents Professor in Rural Health Disparities, was honored with the Texas Dietetic Association's Bluebonnet Award.

The Bluebonnet Award of the Texas Dietetic Association is intended to recognize an individual who is not a dietitian but who has contributed significantly to the advancement of nutrition and dietetics in Texas.

“I congratulate Dr. Esperat for this honor,” TTUHSC President John Baldwin, M.D., said. “She has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment not only to this institution but to improving the health of those in our community.”

The award was received in part for her work with the $1.5 mil grant from the USDA to fund a project focusing on the prevention and control of childhood obesity in West Texas.

Esperat was honored for the TTUHSC project, Transformacion Para Salud, which promotes a community-based approach to the prevention and control of excess weight and obesity among young children in West Texas.

Through community partnerships in Lubbock and El Paso, interventions are included with the use of promotores (community health advocates) in intensive management of at-risk children within the target population.
