17th Annual School Nurse Workshop to Discuss Tattoos and Body Art Trends in School-age Children

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing hosts the Continuing Nursing Education 17th Annual School Nurse Workshop, “Tattoos, Piercing and Body Art,” “Explosive Children – Calming the Storm,” and “Legal Issues for School Nurses.”

WHEN: 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. July 17 and 18.

WHERE: Region 17 Education Service Center, 1111 West Loop 289

EVENT: Day-one will begin with a discussion about the history of tattooing and body piercing, current trends in school-age children, and self mutilation. Other day-one topics include the characteristics of explosive children and how to deal with outbursts.

Day-two discussions will focus on legal issues for school nurses such as recent state laws pertaining to diabetes and Automated External Defibrillators, federal law pertaining to the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Act, and when parents must be informed of information obtained by the school nurse.

Myrna Armstrong, R.N., Ed.D., regional dean for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Highland Lakes at Marble Falls, Anna Jackson, M.Ed., and Stacey C. Ferguson, J.D., will serve as presenters.

Armstrong is an international expert on body art and has published more than 35 peer-reviewed articles on the subject. She has also assisted state and national officials in creating safety regulations for body art.

Ferguson is an attorney with Escamilla & Poneck, Inc., Attorneys at Law in San Antonio. Her practice is concentrated in the areas of student discipline, special education and disabilities law.

Registration for the workshop is $89 per day before July 3 and $190 after deadline (add $8 per day for meals). Attendees may receive a 10 percent discount when enrolling for both days.
