Gov. Rick Perry appointed Josefina Lujan, Ph.D., R.N., and four other members to the Texas Board of Nursing for terms to expire Feb. 1, 2015. The board ensures licensed nurses in Texas meet the necessary requirements to practice, and oversees accreditation of schools of nursing.
“This appointment is historic for my six-R.N. member Hispanic family and a wonderful opportunity for the El Paso community, as well as the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center,” Lujan said. “During my term, I will work diligently with fellow Texas nurses and my colleagues at the Board to execute all obligations, while providing a voice for BSN programs.”
Lujan is the regional dean of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing in El Paso. She is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, Southern Nursing Research Society, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing and the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Association. She also serves as secretary of the board for the El Paso Diabetes Association and is an active volunteer with St. Patricks Cathedral. Lujan received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso, as well as earning a doctorate in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She replaces Brenda Jackson of San Antonio.
Others appointed to the board are: Mary Jane Salgado, an economic developer of the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas and licensed agent for H.W. Paine Real Estate, from Eagle Pass; Sheri Crosby, an attorney for Teber Estes Thorne & Carr, PLLC in Mesquite; Kathy Leader-Horn, a school nurse for the Granbury Independent School District; and Tamara Cowen, the assistant vice president of Patient Safety Solutions for the Valley Baptist Health System in Harlingen.
These appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.
