TTUHSC Awarded Grant to Benefit Disadvantaged Students

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) recently was awarded $769,503 from the Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students. The grant will provide scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled in health professions and nursing programs.

“Since this money is for economically, demographically and geographically disadvantaged students, our ability to attract such scholarship support indicates our success in attracting first-time college students and graduates who will, as health care professionals, return to rural West Texas communities to enhance the quality of life,” said TTUHSC President John C. Baldwin, M.D.

The School of Allied Health Sciences was awarded $484,078, which will benefit undergraduate students in the Clinical Laboratory Science and baccalaureate students in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences programs, as well as graduate students in Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Physical Therapy, Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

The School of Pharmacy received $134,465. Pharmacy students will apply for this scholarship over the summer and receive their awards in the fall.

The Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing received $150,960. The scholarship application will be available for traditional and non-traditional BSN students this month.

HRSA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the principal Federal Agency charged with increasing access to health care for those who are medically underserved.
