Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Achieves Highest Enrollment in History

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) recently celebrated its largest enrollment in the institution’s history. The fall 2009 enrollment of 3,236 students is up 11.4 percent over the 2,904 enrolled for fall 2008.

“Today’s announcement, along with the increased enrollment at Texas Tech University and Angelo State University, is the result of the strategic efforts of the Texas Tech University System and its collective institutions,” said Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent Hance. “We want to grow steadily and continue to provide high academic standards along with an environment that helps our students get more than an education.”

“Strategic growth is important for our institution to address the shortage of health care professionals throughout Texas and beyond,” said Interim TTUHSC President Elmo Cavin.

The School of Allied Health Sciences had the highest enrollment of the university’s six schools, with 1,050 students. The Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing came in second with 974 students. The schools of Medicine and Pharmacy were not far behind with 577 and 489 students respectively. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences enrolled 106 students this year.

The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso officially began classes in August with 40 students from throughout the country. The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is the first medical school in Texas in 30 years to seat a charter class and is the only four-year medical school on the United States-Mexico border.

“We are very pleased with this year’s student enrollment numbers because it means we are giving more students an opportunity to achieve their educational goals and we are training more professionals to provide the very best in health care,” said Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Rial Rolfe, Ph.D.

TTUHSC is a multi-campus institution with campuses in Lubbock, Amarillo, Abilene, El Paso, Highland Lakes, Dallas, Midland and Odessa.
