Congratulations to Jamie Roney for being selected as Sigma Theta Tau’s Member of the Quarter for January 2017. Jamie began her healthcare journey at South Plains College where she obtained her Associate Degree in Nursing. After that she attended Clayton University for a Baccalaureate degree of Science in Health Care Management followed by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center for a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing. She returned to TTUHSC to obtain her Master of Science Degree in Nursing Education in December of 2013 and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice with a leadership focus in May of 2016.

Jamie currently works as a Lead Nurse Planner at TTUHSC where she is responsible for assessing needs, planning, implementing and evaluating continuing nursing education activities in order to meet American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) approved provider program requirements. She is also an Adjunct Faculty Instructor at Lubbock Christian University as well as a Nurse Professional Development Specialist IV and Texas Regional Sepsis Coordinator within Covenant Health Systems.

Jamie has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her nursing career. I may leave out a few since she has earned so many! She earned the United Who’s Who Executives and Professional award in 2005 and 2006. Jamie was also recognized for her value in action in November of 2011 and in December of the same year she was awarded the Covenant Way: Green Belt award for her hard work and dedication at Covenant Health. In April of 2013, Jamie was recognized for Best Practices at Covenant Health. In May of 2013, she received the Distinguished Alumni award from South Plains College as well as the Save My Heart Challenge award from Texas Tech University Health Science Center and the Researcher of the Year award from Covenant Health. From August to December of 2013, she earned the Telluride Patient Safety Educational Roundtable and Student Summer Camp Scholar award, the Covenant Health Excellent Researcher Award, and the Covenant Makers Nursing Professional Development Specialist, Consultant, Facilitator Change Agent Award. In 2014, Jamie received the Covenant Health Value in Action Award for Excellence and the TTUHSC Excellence in Nursing Award. In March of 2015, she received for the second time the Covenant Health Value in Action Award for Excellence and she was also a first place winner of a poster presentation at TTUHSC for her work on Centering Pregnancy Model to Address Low Birth Weight Infants. In May of 2015, Jamie received the Nurse of the Year, Iota Mu Chapter Sigma Theta Tau International award and also the Nurses Know Sepsis award, Sepsis Alliance: Suspect Sepsis, Save Lives dedication.

Jamie has been the primary investigator in many various research projects including Covenant Health Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN) Small Troubles, Adaptive Responses (STAR-2++): Frontline Nurse Engagement in Quality Improvement and Modified Early Warning Scoring Tool: Identifying the At-Risk for Deterioration Patient. She was also the primary investigator for Genetech’s Epidemiologic Study on Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmozyme Trial from 1995 to 1997 and was a field assessor for the University of Texas Center on Aging Study on Medicare in 1996. She participated in ISAR-REACT-4 Reopro Trial During Acute Myocardial Infarction from 2004 to 2007 and also TTUHSC Treatment of Septic Shock with Urokinase Trial from 1999-2000.

Jamie Rooney has been published for her works in the following:

  • Addressing Nursing Workaround Solutions to Encountered Problems: Engagement of Frontline Nurses in STAR-2++ Network Study.
  • Centering Pregnancy Model: EBP for Reducing Low Birth Weight Infants.
  • Establishing a Research Academy Collaborative: Benefits, Challenges, and Preliminary Outcomes.
  • Modified Early Warning Scoring (MEWS): Evaluating the evidence for tool inclusion of sepsis screening criteria and impact on mortality and failure to rescue. Journal of Clinical Nursing.
  • Literature review of Modified Early Warning Scoring tools including sepsis screening criteria.
  • Usability and acceptability of a Modified Early Warning Scoring (MEWS) tool using simulation.
  • Reliability testing of a Modified Early Warning Scoring (MEWS).
  • Answering the clinical question of mortality benefit from using the sepsis resuscitation bundle alone.
  • Using Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool to evaluate the sepsis resuscitation bundle alone.
  • Community health nurse practice: Care of patients with Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (CA-MRSA).

Jamie has presented at local, state, national, and international programs on a variety of topics. She has been able to spread her knowledge into areas such as South Africa, Puerto Rico, Czech Republic, and Germany. She has made a difference and touched the lives of millions not only within her community, but within the world. Jamie is currently serving a two year term on the National Quality Forum (NQF) Infection Disease Committee. This is such an honor as she is the only nurse along with 6 physicians and two HIV experts to serve on this committee.

This is what Jamie had to say about why she enjoys nursing: “My favorite part of being a nurse is mentoring other nurses along this wonderful journey. I enjoy seeing others grow in knowledge and capacity to contribute to our profession. I seek the goals of promoting the professional advancement of nurses in their knowledge and understanding, as well as, promotion of specialty certification in professional nurses to enhance providing excellent nursing care to the acutely ill patient utilizing my extensive critical care background.”

Jamie is an avid Texas Tech football fan and enjoys her season tickets. She loves being a grandmother to two beautiful grand-children as well as a mother to two young adults. She loves photography and making scrapbooking and financial planning a delight for her. Her favorite movie is anything Star Wars related and she likes to watch the cooking channel. She said that she loves watching great chefs and admiring their gift to create great food.

I will leave you with a quote from Jamie: “If not you, then who? We are in the driver’s seat of informing and influencing nursing practice and patient outcomes. Accept the challenge!”
